GOL Play has long been synonymous with free-to-air football. After having been broadcast on La 2, regional television channels and channels such as LaSexta, the free-to-view match of each Primera División matchday has recently fallen exclusively on the Mediapro channel.
A couple of months ago we said that we already knew which DTT channel we could watch the 2024/2025 LaLiga matches on free-to-air. That channel was, to no one’s surprise, Gol Play.
However, in a turn of events, and with the season already underway, several regional channels have left great news for fans: football will return to several regional channels.
Telemadrid, Canal Sur, ETV, TVG and Canarian Radio and Television will broadcast matches in open channels
In Andalusia, Canal Sur has just announced that it has reached an agreement with Mediapro to broadcast LaLiga matches, and has done so by announcing the first free-to-air match of this new era, Sevilla – Villareal, which will be played tomorrow Friday at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium in the Andalusian capital.
According to ABC, the public channel has already chosen the narrator, the Sevillian journalist Antonio Bustos, who will be accompanied as a commentator by another Andalusian, the former Cordoba player Juan Carlos Gómez.
No match schedule or frequency of broadcast has been specified. For example, Telemadrid, which has a similar agreement with Mediapro, has announced that, taking advantage of the fact that there are five Madrid teams in the First Division, they will broadcast 15 open-air matches with Rayo Vallecano, Getafe and Leganés as the main protagonists.
For their part, TVG and AGalega will broadcast Celta de Vigo matches on open television, starting with Villareal – Celta on Monday, August 26. As of today, the next matches announced by Gol Play are the aforementioned Sevilla – Villareal, Villareal – Celta and Osasuna Celta on September 1 and Levante – Athletic on September 8, 2024.
Radio Televisión Canaria has already announced the same thing to broadcast UD Las Palmas matches on open channels, starting with a match against Sevilla. Thus, the plan is not to remove matches from Gol Play, but rather, from the regional channels, to support their local teams.
