Google today announced a set of New Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Features for Your Workspace Apps, including Google Docs, Gmail, Sheets, and Slides. Features include new ways to generate, summarize, and render text with AI in Google Docs—similar to the features in ChatGPT—the option to generate full emails in Gmail, and the ability to produce AI images, audio, and video to illustrate presentations.

Although it has announced this battery of functions, they will not be available yet. Only the AI writing tools in Docs and Gmail will be available to a group of “trusted testers” in the US. Google says these and other features will be available to the rest of the public later in the year, but didn’t say when.

“At Google we have been responsibly developing large language models to be able to safely incorporate them into our products,” explains Tomás Kurian, executive director of Google, in the statement. Google Cloud.

With the announcement of these new features for Workspace, Google tries to catch up in the generative AI race, without doing it completely. The tech giant has been rushing to put its own options on the market, since the arrival of ChatGPT last year and since the launch of Microsoft’s new Bing powered by this technology.

  • Enable workflows in Chat.

Google shows in a video it posted that AI will be used to write text messages. personalized marketing for customers. It also shows how turn bullet points into a full email and summarize the content of a long email chain in Gmail.

We are very excited about the potential of generative AI and the opportunities it will open up, from helping people express themselves creatively, to helping developers create new kinds of apps, to transforming the way businesses and governments interact with their customers and voters. Stay tuned for more to come in the coming weeks and months.

Tomás Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud

Several of these features are similar to those recently announced by the competition. Slack, for example, reported a few days ago that it will use ChatGPT to create similar meeting summaries. Google insists that they will proceed prudently. He promised more news for the coming weeks.

The company asked all its employees early last month to contribute to the development of Bard, its own experimental conversational AI based on LaMDA. In internal messageSundar Pichai asked the googlers to dedicate between 2 and 4 hours of their time to improve the AI during the testing phase.
