The Chromecast with Google TV is one of the most interesting options (there is the Fire TV Stick range or other alternatives to stand up to it) when it comes to convert an old television into a modern device with access to all Play Store applications.
But to remain interesting, good support is essential and that is why Google continues to add updates that try to improve and correct defects present in your great little device. That is what it tries to do with the latest update for 2023, and among its additions one that tries to solve one of the dongle's major defects.
Fixing a major defect
Google is releasing a new update for its Chromecast with Google TV. An update that comes with performance improvements that, for example, will benefit the “Live” tab, but also an optimization of the available space.
And the space available to install applications has been one of the great limitations of the Chromecast with Google TV. We already saw in a tutorial how the storage of this device could be expanded at home, but it is still a total hassle and that is why Google is trying to find a solution.
In their effort to free up more storage space on the Chromecast with Google TV, they have made changes to the device's settings to reduce the size of pre-installed applications that are not used so that users have more space to install and use applications.
Additionally, Google has announced that it has modified the way the Chromecast uses RAM and the way the Google TV home screen loads rows of recommendations. The objective is for the basic system applications to work more agilely and fluidly by using less memory. So that applications open faster.
They have improved response speed for many of the home screen's functions and that includes preloading rows of movies and shows before scrolling, but also optimizing the way tabs load and ensuring results load faster when using search.
Finally, the Google TV section (free TV channels) is also receiving some updates, although they are limited to the United States. arrives the “Recent” category, which makes it easier to access recently watched free TV channels. In addition comes the “Local News” categorywhich offers access to free news channels in the user's geographic area.
Finally, A new row appears in the “For you” tab “Free live news and opinions”. In addition, they add 14 new free Google TV channels, including Xumo Holiday Movie Channel, DraftKings and Speedvision, so there are already more than 115 free channels integrated without the need for additional downloads or subscriptions.
The update is already being deployed and you can check if you have it available by entering the “Settings” on the main screen of the Chromecast with Google TV and then entering “System” and “About” and clicking on “Upgrade system”.
