Unveiled this summer on Android, the new design of the Google Maps navigation bar is currently being deployed on iOS. This redesign aims to simplify and purify the application’s interface, while adding a dose of artificial intelligence.
Three tabs instead of five
The bottom bar of Google Maps goes from five to three tabs on iPhone. The “Itineraries” tab disappears but its features remain accessible in the new “You” tab, which replaces “Saved”. It includes saved routes and locations.
The “Explore” tab will offer personalized suggestions based on artificial intelligence. Depending on the places you usually visit, Google Maps will be able to suggest restaurants, cultural activities… and even trips that will follow your tastes.
The central tab still sports the bookmark icon and now integrates notifications and messages, previously in the “News” tab which is removed. Finally, the “Contribute” tab does not change. The update remains focused on design for the most part; do not expect major new features.
A cleaner interface
While the previous design’s five tabs fit in with Google’s Material You style, they could feel overwhelming. This move to three tabs makes navigating Google Maps lighter and clearer.
This change is related to Google Maps version 6.129.1 on iOS. If you don’t see it yet, try closing the app completely. This server-side rollout should be coming to all iPhone users soon.
After the redesign of the interface with floating panels last month on Android, Google is continuing to improve the experience on its mapping application. Appreciable developments, while waiting for their arrival on the iOS version in the coming months. Note that Google Maps remains the ultra-majority mapping application — including on iOS — even though Maps is installed by default on our dear iPhones.
