Since last May, Google Maps has been revamping the aesthetics of its application. We now have a more minimalist map, a less cluttered bottom bar and, in general, a more modern interface. The changes keep coming and Google plans to continue giving them a makeover. News.
It’s the icons’ turn: Google Maps has updated the pin-shaped map markers that we’ve always seen. It’s a good idea to know how they change so as not to get confused when using the app. This is what the Google Maps icons look like now.
After the new map, touch the new icons
After the lower bar with fewer elements and the map with softer colors, it’s time to see new changes: the icons shaped like pins (or thumbtacks, depending on how you see it) present new colors and shapes.
It is a subtle change, although no less important, not in vain, these icons indicate points of interest such as hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions, monuments, and so on.
These icons, which have traditionally been shaped like an elongated thumbtack, have disappeared. Obviously, it is still the application icon, although within it, a shorter and rounded outline can be seen by a white background at each point on the map.
Thus, the icon indicating the category of the place of interest is located in the inner white circle. Google creates consistency in Maps: They now better match the icon design of stars, flags and hearts (favorite places).
Despite this modest change, most pins are almost identical inside, while others have changed. For example, museums have gone from a blueish green to a pastel purple. Zoos, on the other hand, are shown in a lighter shade.
The changes could help to have a better map visibilitywith icons that take up less space. They also look a little better aesthetically: we already have them on our mobile, apparently, this redesign comes from the server side. And it is available both in the app for Android and iOS and on the web.
