The Google Pixel 8 Pro arrived with a new sensor under its arm or, rather, under the flash: a thermometer. The problem is that In Spain it was only used to measure the temperature of objectswhich greatly reduced its usefulness.
Body temperature measurement came to the Pixel 8 later, but only in the United States. Now, almost a year later, body temperature measurement on the Google Pixel 8 Pro and 9 Pro is available in Spain and other European countries.
A Google Pixel as a thermometer
Measuring the temperature of a steak is not the same as measuring your body temperature, and the latter was only possible to do officially with an American Google Pixel, the only region where body temperature measurement was active on Pixels with thermometer sensor: the Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL.
If you had one of these high-end Pixels, you couldn’t get the most out of it in Spain, as body temperature measurement wasn’t available unless you used a US SIM to trick the system. Fitbit’s technical support now states that the app works in all of these countries:
Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Kingdom of the Netherlands, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, SpainSweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the United States
In addition to being in Spain and with a Spanish SIM, you will need a Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro or Pixel 9 Pro XL with Android 14 and firmware version UQ1A.231205.015.A1 or higher and the Pixel Thermometer app, which is available on Google Play.
If you meet all the requirements and already have body temperature measurement activated on your Pixel, then you will see that in addition to being able to measure the temperature of objects, you can also measure body temperature placing the phone on your forehead.
The measurement itself guides you using voice during the measurementas it will be impossible for you to see the mobile screen during the process. In our tests, the measurement was acceptable, with a margin of error of around 0.5C compared to a traditional thermometer.
