Google will offer an ecosystem similar to Apple’s Locate application based on all Android devices in the world to help you find a lost connected object.
The announcement was expected, Google had hidden it behind all its presentations on its artificial intelligence solutions. The firm finally took advantage of its Google I/O 2023 conference to start unveiling the new version of its mobile operating system, Android 14.
Surprisingly, Google hasn’t particularly focused on smartphones but rather on two other types of devices benefiting from alternative versions of Android: tablets and smartwatches. It must be said that Google has been looking for a few years to offer a broad ecosystem of products that work with each other with Google Fast Pair or nearby sharing.
The first announcement concerns a new version of Find my Device (Locate my Device, in French) allowing you to easily find your devices. Like what Apple offers with the Locate application, the device search function will work based on global geolocation information, for all Android devices available in the world.
Harassment risk prevention functions
Also like Apple, this feature will be able to notify users when a nearby device does not belong to you and is following you. A way to prevent potential cases of harassment as we have seen with the Apple AirTag.
This new version of Find my Device will be available during the summer, without further details for the moment.
