Government preparing to rein in social media companies; Audit will be done every 3 months

At present, all social media companies are required to provide details of action taken by them in response to various complaints as per IT Rules 2021. According to official sources, now every quarter, the Ministry of Electronics and IT (Meity) will comply.

At present all social media companies are required by IT Rules 2021 to provide details of action taken by them in response to individual complaints. Sources told PTI that through this audit, the ministry will find out whether social media companies are complaining to it. right or wrong. The government has proposed to implement an appeals panel to crack down on social media platforms. In this proposal, the government will have the right to reverse the decisions taken by social media companies on any complaint. According to this rule, much importance has not been given to public consultation.
