You probably don’t know it, but there is a little-known trick to reduce the consumption of your electric car, according to a Kia study.
While the autonomy of zero-emission cars has increased over the years and innovations, many drivers are still stressed about the idea of making long journeys or not finding a terminal to charge their vehicle. A fear that even has a name, since it is known in Anglo-Saxon countries as “range anxiety”.
Fortunately, there are many ways to reduce the consumption of an electric vehicle and therefore to optimize the range. We are of course thinking of solutions such as reducing your speed or even avoiding excessive use of the air conditioning. But there is another, little-known method that would also be very effective in consuming less energy when traveling in an electric car. And this one is surprising.
The effect of music
According to an extensive survey carried out by the British branch of Kia on a handful of participants in the United Kingdom, the music we listen to while driving would have an impact on electricity consumption. So no, contrary to what you might think, the melody does not play directly on the energy used by pumping more or less on the battery. It’s actually a little different.
Indeed, if music has an impact on the autonomy of an electric car, it is above all because it acts directly on the way we drive. Indeed, according to the study of the Korean manufacturer, listening to classical music would make it easier to relax and therefore to have a more flexible driving, thus reducing consumption. But what is the ideal song? It would be Beethoven’s Symphony No 9 in D Minor Op. 125.
A very serious study
You are most likely wondering how the manufacturers’ teams came to this astonishing conclusion of precision. For this, several participants were invited to take the wheel of the new Kia EV6 on a mixed course of 29 kilometers. Accompanied by an acoustics expert, they then listened to several different pieces, while sensors measured several data.
The Kia teams then collected these, whether the heartbeats of the participants or the average expenditure of autonomy, to arrive at these results. But then, what is the music that would on the contrary consume the most? It would be Blinding Lights, by The Weeknd, with its very dynamic rhythm.
