A few weeks ago we discovered that WhatsApp was preparing an email verification, whose use was not very clear. The system was under development, so it was not functional at the time. Now it is, as far as we have been able verify our email accountsomething that is virtually useless today, but it helps us to know the status of the function and what it will be used for.
Since the first time we saw email verification in WhatsApp, the texts attached to the window have changed, now making it clear that the email it will be used as yet another way to access your account. Seems like a good step before whatsapp usernames and accounts not based on phone numbers.

This is my email, WhatsApp
As of today, the only way to log in to WhatsApp is by verifying your phone number, either through a code that comes to you by SMS or as a call. Nevertheless, Meta is preparing all kinds of alternatives for login, including the use of email, passkeys and even other apps such as Instagram or Messenger.
WhatsApp is simultaneously working on all these alternative logins and we have followed their development by forcing them into beta. Some, like the one for passkeys, still don’t work, but lmail verification is functional.
That is, after entering our email, we receive the verification code by mail. A numerical code that, when entered back into WhatsApp, mark our email as verified. This has nothing to do with verifications -like those of companies- but it is necessary for the email to be attached to our account, just as it happens with the verification of the telephone number when we register.
AND what happens when the email is verified in whatsapp? Well, for now, absolutely nothing, because the only way to log in to the mobile phone is still with the phone number and we have not found a way to force other modes.
However, the changes to the text in this window are also noteworthy. When we first saw it in early August it stated that “your email is used to protect and verify your account”, whereas now it states that “Email is another way to access your account”. The last clarification is also important: “Your contacts can’t see it“.
That is, it confirms that we can sign in with email instead of phone, as an additional option. In this way, if we lose or change the phone number, we will still have another way to log in.
