As some of you surely know, I am a law student besides writing here every day. I have to admit that sometimes it’s a bit difficult to combine everything, but whatever you work a little, if you like what you do, it’s not as difficult as it seems, and as in my case I like both, it’s not that complicated as it might seem.
Law is a career in which you have to read a lot. The manuals are many and enormous, the sentences long, the laws endless —and on top of that they change them every two weeks!—, and the exams, with few exceptions, are boring. However, technology can help us a lot in these cases, and today I want to tell you how I use Chat-GPT to make my student life a little easier. Of course, always within the ethical canons that must govern all students and professionals.
work with notes
Notes are an essential element in the life of any university student. It is, along with the manual, what one is guided to study. I want to make specific reference to the notes I take in class and not to the manual, because I don’t use the latter with Chat-GPT. I understand that I have not written it, and therefore it would not be ethical. For this I stick only to my notes.
When one takes notes in class, they tend to be quite messy, or at least not as well as one would like. That’s why you have to clean them later. And GPT-4 helped me for it. It’s simple, once I’ve taken notes, I copy and paste them into Chat-GPT, and I ask it to extract an index that will organize them in the best possible wayeven if you have to change the order and so on.
As soon as it does, I work with that index to clean up my notes and make them as orderly, clear and concise as possible. Thus, then it will be easier to work on them, learn, understand and remember them on test day and in the future. I can do this with both my iPhone 14 Pro and my MacBook Air, so it’s even better.
prepare exams
Perhaps the best application that Chat-GPT can have for any type of student is to help with exam preparation. It is a wonder. Once I have finished preparing the material for a specific exam, I copy and paste the topics into GPT-4 and ask him to ask me all kinds of questions: concept, development, multiple choice, etc. Also, if something is wrong, he corrects it for me, and He even gives me a grade out of 10 for each answer and for the set of all of them.
It is also very useful for prepare small flashcards that help to better retain the information. It is as simple as copying and pasting the material, asking them to make flashcards of each one, and studying the content. Then you can ask him to check if you know them by giving you only the beginning of each one and you being the one who has to complete them. If you complete them correctly, he tells you, and if you do it wrong or you don’t remember, he corrects you.
Search jurisprudence

The search for jurisprudence is one of the most boring tasks for every lawyer. It consists of locating judgments that deal with cases that are similar or very similar to the one you are dealing with in order to use them as an argument in your situationsee what the parties argued, etc.
Chat-GPT does this well but only sometimes. Is very good looking for jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the European Union, since his most famous cases are published on the internet. However, it does not work in the case of Spain. He can’t find her, and if he mentions anything, it’s a lie. However, as far as the European Union is concerned, it is very good. You raise the case, you ask him for jurisprudence and he finds it. From there, all that remains is to search for the sentence on the internet, read it, study it and see how it can be used.
Chat-GPT is a great tool. You have to be careful and follow a strict ethical control that, although it may seem excessive, is necessary. It cannot be used to do an exam or a job, because then it is not the student who would be being evaluated, besides that it would not be fair with the rest of the classmates. However, to work with him, prepare material, review for tests and so on, it is a great tool that we should all use if we consider it appropriate and necessary.
