The countries where you can use it These are: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Romania and Sweden, United Kingdom, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Switzerland.
His Validity is usually 2 years and covers any trip in case of tourism, studies or work, but it is not valid if what you intend is to go there with the sole objective of receiving health care. You will have the same rights and conditions as citizens of the countryas well as the same costs, which do not necessarily have to be the same as those in Spain, so it is a good idea to find out about them before travelling and, of course, to ask for the card in advance. You may have to pay something for care or medicines, or it may be the case that everything is free, but you should find out so as not to get any surprises.
Although you could order it in person, you also have the option of do it from your mobile whether you have a digital certificate or not. You can also renew it in the same way from your mobile phone, up to 60 days before its expiration via the Internet. Once you request it, it will arrive in approximately 5 to 10 days and you can then use it on your trips or stays in other countries of the European Union. If you have lost it or it has been stolen, you can request the Provisional Substitute Certificate which is valid for 90 days.
How to order it with your mobile phone?
You can order the card in person or online. These options include the possibility of doing so comfortably using your mobile phone, whether you have a digital certificate or not. All of these options will not take much time and will allow you to receive the card at home for free in just a few days.
With digital certificate
To be able to request it this way you only need your mobile phone, a good Internet connection and to have the digital certificate installed on your smartphone. Whoever says digital certificate also says cl@ve system or electronic DNI If you prefer:

- Scroll down to where it says Request
- Choose the identification option you want
- Confirms that your address is correct
- Click on Request card
- They will tell you that the application has been confirmed and you can download the provisional certificate if you need it.
Without certificate
In this case you have two options, with a form or via SMS. If you want to do it by filling in the data in a form, follow these steps:
- Go to the Social Security website
- Scroll down the page until you reach Request section
- Press on Request/Renew Card
- Writes your data (ID, name, email, place of residence, address)
- Give to save
- Check that the data is correct and validate.
- They confirm your request and it will arrive at your home in 5 days.

- Choose the option via SMS
- Enter your ID, date of birth and phone number
- They will send you one one time password
- Confirm it and follow the steps to request your card
Remember that in order to request it this way, you phone number must be in the database from Social Security, otherwise you will have to choose the other way to fill out the form and follow the steps indicated.
Calling by phone
You can also request that the card be sent to your home by telephone without leaving your home in the telephones 901 16 65 65 or 91 542 11 76. This isn’t 24 hours a day, but it’s useful if you want to contact a person and follow all the steps, but you don’t want to go to an office or don’t have the time.
You can do it Monday to Friday, except holidays, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.If they are busy or don’t answer, try again later. If you can’t get through, you may have to go to the office or do it online, although if you insist you will probably be able to get in touch.
Make an appointment to request it in person
If you want to do it in person, you can also do it from the Attention and Information Centers (CAISS) Social Security. There, a person will assist you and ask you to follow certain steps to obtain the European Health Insurance Card. However, it is recommended that you make an appointment in advance, and in time for it to arrive before your trip, something that you can also request from your mobile phone.
