If you’ve been using mobile phones long before smartphones came along, you’ll remember what were known as ringtones, the melodies that were advertised in magazines and even on television. Ringtones gradually lost popularity as technological advances made it easier to transfer files between devices and Having the song of the moment as a ringtone became a common thing.
Customs are changing, and nowadays it is more common to have one of the default ringtones on your phone as a ringtone (or even to have the phone set to silent). Even so, if you have grown tired of the iPhone ringtones and want to use a different ringtone, it is possible to create a custom ringtone.
Apple recommends using GarageBand to create custom ringtones
As Apple itself explains on its support page, we can create a custom ringtone Using the GarageBand appThis application comes installed by default on the iPhone, but if you have deleted it you can download it completely free of charge through the App Store.
Once downloaded, we will have to hold down the app icon until the contextual menu appears, where we will see the option ‘Create new audio recording’Next we will have to press the ‘Tracks’ button located in the upper left corner of the interface (indicated in the screenshot below with an arrow).
The next step is to press the button corresponding to the function to access the loops available in the application (it is located in the upper right corner of the interface). From here we can select one of the loops available in GarageBand, but What interests us is the ‘Files’ menu that appears at the top.
From this menu we can navigate through the ‘Files’ application and select the file we want to use. As indicated by the app itself, it is possible to import AIFF, WAV, CAF, Apple Loops, AAC, MP3 and MIDI audio filesGarageBand also gives us the option to use a song from our Apple Music library, but we can only use a song saved locally on the iPhone that is not protected.
Once you have located the file you want to use, you will have to hold your finger on the file and drag it to the ‘Tracks’ view. Ringtones have a maximum duration of 30 seconds, so You will need to select and cut out the section you want to useApple recommends making sure the track is on the far left: if there is a blank space before it, the ringtone will start playing later.
Once the previous steps have been completed, we will have to press the arrow-shaped icon located in the upper left corner of the interface and select the ‘My songs’ option. The next step is to press the icon with the three dots located at the top right, choose the ‘Select’ option and click on the file we have just created.
Finally, all that remains is to press the button to share the file that appears in the lower left corner, Select the ‘Tone’ option and click on ‘Export’GarageBand offers us the option of ending the process or indicating from the app itself how we want to use the sound we have created (“standard ringtone”, “standard message tone” or “assign to contact”).
Once you complete the steps above, you will hear your custom ringtone every time someone calls you. Remember that you can change your iPhone ringtone at any time by going to Settings > Sounds & Vibration > Ringtone.
