This summer I have to travel a lot for different reasons (vacations included), and have ensured some form of internet connection almost anywhere I will need it not only to work remotely, but also to stay connected with family and friends, and for leisure.
If you don’t want to be left isolated at the most inopportune moment, or receive surprises on your bill for unexpected charges, here I tell you how I have prepared for you.n summer traveling without losing the connection.
When travelling within Spain, two SIMs
In my specific case, I have unlimited 5G data on my main line so I don’t have to worry about overconsumption, but if you don’t have an unlimited amount of data and you’re worried about running out during the holidays because you don’t have WiFi close at hand, my advice is:
- Activate the Summer promotions that give away gigabytes during the summer, if your operator offers them.
- Temporarily switch to a rate with more gigabytesor with unlimited data if you have the possibility. Whether you have a contract or not, you can always change for free to a more expensive rate within the same operator, and after the holidays, return to your usual rate.
In addition to my main line fully loaded with gigabytes, I also usually carry a SIM from another operator with another coverage to ensure my backup connectionThis additional line can also be useful for those who do not want to change the rate of their main line, or for those looking for a dedicated device to provide WiFi wherever you go.
In my case, for the backup connection I use a prepaid SIM from Simyo, to which I will apply the summer promotion when I consider it appropriate, and which I use on an old mobile phone, also to free up the load on my main mobile phone when I expect to be connected for several hours.
When travelling within the EU, activate roaming
For departures outside Spain, and within the European Economic Area, where the countries are located, 27 EU countries, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, roaming is freeIt is important to remember that the United Kingdom, Andorra, Switzerland or Türkiye do not have free roaming.
So if roaming is free, it means that you can use your mobile phone in the European Union at no additional cost to your national rate, receiving free calls, making free calls to any EU country if your rate has unlimited minutes in Spain, and surfing the internet for free additional, although in many cases, the gigabytes available in roaming are less than those in the national network.
Your operator will send you an SMS when you arrive in the new country, informing you of the Free gigabytes at your disposal (around 50 GB if you have unlimited data in Spain).
Since roaming in the EU is free, you just have to make sure that everything is set up to work normally, and for that it is necessary that before leaving, you speak to customer service to make sure that Your line has roaming activated. Also, you need Activate data roaming in your mobile settings.
If you travel outside the EU, Holafly is a good companion
Travelling outside the EU without changing tariffs and operators is possible and convenient, but generally quite expensive, even if your consumption is discreet, or you have resorted to one of the savings options offered by some operators. So in this case, I almost recommend Disable data roaming on your mobileto avoid uncontrolled background connections. Not doing so means that you can Send a 1 MB photo by mistake and easily pay 12 euros.
To provide your mobile with an Internet connection in other countries, the cheapest option is usually buy a local prepaid card to use during your stay, unless they have an eSIM service, you will not be able to buy the card until you arrive in the destination country.
However, instead of buying a local card, you can use one of the rates from Spanish operators such as Vodafone currently includes free roaming in the United States and the United KingdomIf you want to prepare as early as possible, it is best to buy a local eSIM beforehand, and if you don’t want to complicate things too much by searching among unknown operators in the destination country, alternatives such as Holafly offer a wide variety of rates with unlimited data in many countries.
