We are all looking forward to seeing the iPhone 15 unveiled next Tuesday, no doubt. And what we will focus on the most is the disappearance of the Lightning port and the arrival of the USB-C port on the phone as a result of the new laws of the European Union. Finally, everything will be universalized.
But let’s not go so fast, because the rollout of functions that Apple prepares may not be as universal as we think. Ironically, the ports on the new iPhone 15s may be more different than ever. Maybe you have to learn some figures.
Power, bandwidth and charger: the trio that will have to be studied
The clue gives us Apple itself, which has recently launched a USB-C to USB-C cable of one meter and 25 euros. A clue that already leaves evidence of the USB-C port on the next iPhone on a silver platter. Now, that USB-C cable only has data transmission rates typical of USB 2.0 ports.
That means, I’m afraid, that the iPhone 15 is going to offer those speeds on its USB-C port, no matter how much technology has advanced in recent years. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro could offer much higher speeds and therefore would require a Thunderbolt cable to reach them. Both cables may look the same, but in specs they would be different.
The rumors also say that we will have to differentiate charging power of each iPhone model: the iPhone 15 could use a less powerful charger than the iPhone 15 Pro. This means that we will also have to take into account the model that we buy to choose the ideal charger.
And before all this, the icing on the cake: multiport USB-C chargers have high prices. Ugreen has just introduced one of four USB-C ports that will cost $269, no less.
So yes, we are all going to have a USB-C port, but at the same time we are going to have to differentiate those ports by power, data transmission speed, complement them with the appropriate charger… the transition is going to be more complex than usual. What do we expect if we want to squeeze the highest speeds or charges offered by the iPhone 15.
