Instagram is about to add non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to its platform. A first test is already underway in the United States with a handful of Internet users.

Meta, the American group behind Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, continues to negotiating its shift to the metaverse. Under the impetus of Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and founder of the firm, Meta is investing colossal sums in the metaverse, this digital universe accessible in virtual and augmented reality.

Among the key elements of the metaverse are non-fungible tokens (NFTs). These works of art, whose authenticity is certified on the blockchain, are an integral part of the metaverses. NFTs make it possible in particular to exchange digital real estate in virtual spaces or to sell virtual goods, such as clothes or any goodies.

Meta deploys NFTs on Instagram

Unsurprisingly, Meta quickly announced the integration of NFTs into its social networks, starting with Instagram. Last March, Mark Zuckerberg also claimed to want “introduce NFTs to Instagram in the short term”.

As promised, non-fungible tokens are therefore entering Instagram this Monday, May 9, 2022, report our colleagues from CoinDesk. According to the media, Meta launched a pilot program from a handful of Internet users in the United States.

“A small group of US-based NFT enthusiasts” are now free to connect their Metamask wallet, which holds their digital works, and add them to their Instagram profile picture. NFT investors can tag the creator of the token and prove ownership.

According to information obtained by CoinDesk, Meta will not charge a fee for this NFT integration service. It will be possible to add the tokens of your collection without having to pay cryptocurrencies for the integration.

Eventually, Instagram will support NFTs deployed on many popular blockchains in the ecosystem, such as Ethereum (ETH), Polygon (MATIC), Solana (SOL), and Flow (FLOW). Currently, however, most NFTs are deployed on the Ethereum blockchain. What do you think of this initiative? We are waiting for your opinion in the comments.
