For the most incredulous, studies confirm it. The total revenue of the artificial intelligence (AI) market worldwide, including software, hardware and services, will grow 19.6 percent this year, to reach 6,961,054,560 pesos (Mexican pesos).
In this game, the world of smartphones has not been left behind. AI has become a crucial tool for the sector, with algorithms that allow the creation of increasingly powerful devices and with much more advanced processing proposals that favor photographic performance, connectivity, energy efficiency and data reading.
But in reality, how complex is the use of artificial intelligence in smartphones? Do we really understand how it is used? What benefits does it deliver to the end user?Artificial intelligence in smartphones
To answer these questions, Unocero spoke with the team at vivo, a smartphone firm that has made a strong commitment to the use of Artificial Intelligence in the development and operation of its devices.
Unocero: Without going into technicalities, how do you take advantage of the benefits of AI in the manufacture and operation of a smartphone?
«Artificial Intelligence (AI) applies different disciplines such as mathematics, computing and even neuroscience to develop technologies that emulate human thought and enable automated and autonomous processes. Smartphone makers harness AI to improve photo quality, improve power efficiency by closing unnecessary background apps, protect battery health by optimizing charging time, and predict app usage to improve the experience of the user. As a result, the efficiency of the device is maximized»
Unocero: What is the current status of the performance of AI solutions in the smartphone market?
“The development and implementation of AI in the smartphone industry has great potential as these technologies are still relatively new to the market. The incorporation of AI into smartphones began with a focus on improving photography and video capabilities and enabling virtual assistants. Currently, AI can increase the autonomy of devices as it adapts to user preferences. For example, it can suggest certain apps during different times of the day after it has detected and learned from the user’s daily habits.”
Unocero: How will this integration evolve and what is its potential in the near future?
“In addition to ongoing efforts to refine photo and video processing, the most important potential of AI lies in the new user experiences that smartphones will offer in the near future. Thanks to AI, the device can adapt to user preferences to improve performance and autonomy, and this is just the beginning. Vivo engineers predict that AI performance will increase, bringing numerous technological visions to life.
We expect to see further advances in natural language processing and computer vision, as well as in optimizing smartphone performance through dynamic and intelligent allocation of resources. Other promising areas are smart computing power scheduling and optimization of power consumption. Another interesting application is found in the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem.
The smartphone will be able to improve the user experience by extending its automation to smart devices such as washing machines, lights, vacuum cleaners and more. For example, upon detecting that the user has left home, the smartphone can automatically turn off devices such as screens and lights. Or, when the user is about to get home, the smartphone can direct the devices to start playing music or turn on the lights. Similarly, virtual assistants will also gradually improve with the help of AI. The next steps will be the recognition not only of the user’s commands, but also of the tone of voice, and even of emotions, to achieve a greater understanding of the context and offer better results in each interaction”
