Today we are going to see how to force restart, DFU mode and recovery mode on new iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
The new iPhone 14s may be separated into two ranges, but they have a lot in common. Among them, essential features such as shutdown, restart and recovery mode (DFU). Since the disappearance of the Home button on the iPhone X, the manipulation of all these procedures have evolved.
As often on iPhoneSoft, here is a new tip for beginners that fills the section iPhone easy.
These little iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or Mac tips often help novices, but can also sometimes surprise the most expert among us!
The gestures that save on the iPhone 14
The new iPhone 14 (and its Plus, Pro, and Pro Max variants) is now available for sale, so it’s worth knowing how to access its rescue modes in case you run into trouble. Read on to find out how to force restart iPhone 14, use recovery mode, or even enter DFU, as well as when to use these different options.
Turn off iPhone 14
Since the iPhone X, switching off also requires going through a new key combination, which is obviously the case for the iPhone 14:
- Press Power + Volume Down at the same time for a few seconds.
- Otherwise, go to Settings -> General -> Shut down (at the very bottom)
- Otherwise, ask Siri: “Restart iPhone” and confirm.
A few seconds are enough to restart an iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro, when several steps are necessary to put it in recovery mode (DFU). We explain everything below
Restart iPhone 14 Normally
In many cases, if you observe unexpected behavior from your iPhone, a simple restart will suffice. It’s just a matter of turning off your device and turning it back on.
Either press and hold the side button and a volume button (then slide to power off)
Either go to Settings > General > Shut down > slide to power off).
Force Restart iPhone 14 if Freezing
This is the best option if your iPhone’s touchscreen isn’t working and/or you can’t turn it off/on normally to fix a frozen or unresponsive iPhone:
- Press and quickly release the volume up (+) button.
- Press the volume down (-) button and quickly release it.
- Press and hold the side (Power) button until the Apple logo appears, then release.
Your iPhone should restart quickly.
Recovery mode for iPhone 14 and 14 Pro
Use recovery mode if a force restart doesn’t work or you see a blue or red screen or freezes during startup. You will be able to restore or update it:
- Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC with a Lightning cable.
Select “Trust” on your iPhone screen to allow the connection to your computer, then open Finder in macOS Catalina and later or iTunes for PC/macOS Mojave and earlier. - Press and quickly release the volume up (+) button.
- Press the volume down (-) button and quickly release it.
- Push the button Power and hold it down until you see the recovery mode screen (computer icon + cable).
- Select your iPhone from the left sidebar of the window Finder.
- You can now choose to update or restore your iPhone.
If you choose to update, your computer will attempt to reinstall iOS without erasing your data. If you choose to restore, your iPhone will be erased and a fresh copy of iOS will be installed.
DFU mode for iPhone 14 and 14 Pro
In rare cases when recovery mode does not work, the next step may be to enter device firmware update (DFU) mode. This is usually an operation performed by an Apple genius/technician, but you can perform it from home (jailbreak enthusiasts know this well).
- Press and hold the side button for 10 seconds.
- While holding the side button, press and hold the volume down button for 5 seconds.
- Release the side button and hold the volume down button for another 10 seconds.
- There’s no computer icon when you enter DFU mode – when you’ve entered it correctly, your iPhone screen should stay black. If the Apple logo appears, you have not performed the process correctly.
- Follow your computer’s instructions to complete the device firmware update.
- You can exit DFU mode by performing a force restart (see above).
Additional support
- If you can’t update or restore your device using recovery mode or activate it because buttons are broken, or if your device is stuck in Activation Lock mode, contact Apple Support or nearest electronics repair providers.
There you go, you know all about the new iPhone 14s, but you should know that all this also works on the previous models like iPhone 13, iPhone 12 and others.
