In the smartphone market, the volume of smartphones shipped is mainly dominated by Samsung, this is explained by the fact that the South Korean giant has a ton of Galaxy models sold, many of which are entry-level and mid-range. However, when we look at the popularity by smartphone model, we realize that Apple occupies the top of the ranking by a wide margin. In the second quarter of 2024, the TOP 3 of the best-selling smartphones in the world is 100% dominated by Apple.
iPhone 15 voted best-selling smartphone in Q2 2024
According to a recent study by the analysis firm Counterpoint, the iPhone 15 is undoubtedly the best-selling smartphone in the world in the second quarter of this year. The ranking is clearly in favor of Apple, because behind it, we find the iPhone 15 Pro Max and then the iPhone 15 Pro in third position.
This performance translates into a “market share” that is extremely low, as there are a huge number of smartphones in circulation all over the world:
- iPhone 15: 4.1%
- iPhone 15 Pro Max: 3.7%
- iPhone 15 Pro: 3.1%
In Counterpoint’s ranking, Samsung’s Galaxy phones also feature heavily, but unlike Apple, they are mostly entry-level models. The Galaxy A15 5G and Galaxy A15 4G take 4th and 5th place, respectively. Samsung’s Galaxy A series is known for offering affordable options with decent specs, but without the premium features of the Galaxy S lines.
The Galaxy S24 Ultra (Samsung’s “current” smartphone) is still present in the ranking, but in 9th place with a market share of 1.4%, a disappointing performance for Samsung, which is doing everything it can to make its smartphone rival Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max.
What if we compare with the 2nd quarter of last year?
Counterpoint also made a comparison with the second quarter of 2023 in order to see the changes from one year to the next. We can see that the top of the ranking is still dominated by Apple with its iPhones. The iPhone 14/15 are in the same position, as are the other iPhone models, which shows that Apple manages to maintain a trend from one generation of iPhone to the next. We also note, in this comparison, that iPhone shipments have been a little more fragile from one year to the next:
- iPhone 15 / iPhone 14: 4.1% vs. 4.2%
- iPhone 15 Pro Max / iPhone 14 Pro Max: 3.7% vs. 3.8%
- iPhone 15 Pro / iPhone 14 Pro: 3.1% vs. 3.2%
There’s nothing catastrophic, but Counterpoint’s statistics reflect what we’ve seen in various reports published since the beginning of the year: iPhone sales have been worse since January 2024.
