The highly anticipated release of the iPhone 16 is fast approaching. While Apple is expected to unveil its new smartphones in September, mass production of the OLED screens that will power these devices has already begun at Samsung Display and LG Display.
Massive orders for OLED screens for the iPhone 16
According to industry sources in Korea, Apple has ordered no less than 80 million OLED panels from Samsung and 43 million from LG for its iPhone 16. Volumes 30% higher than sales estimates, which are counting on 90 million iPhone 16s sold this year.
Samsung and LG started initial production of OLED screens for the iPhone 16 in June, before accelerating significantly in July. Apple’s two historic suppliers are reportedly on track to meet their commitments. This is good news for their financial results, as screen deliveries should materialize in their Q3 and Q4 figures.
LG Display would be particularly well positioned, with an increase in its deliveries of around 10 million units compared to last year. The Korean would thus exceed 30% of market share, to the detriment of Samsung. For the first time, LG would ensure its deliveries on time, without delay. Samsung would maintain stable volumes, but with a greater proportion of screens for the expensive iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max (around 60%).
Bigger screens for the iPhone 16 Pro
Design-wise, the iPhone 16s are unlikely to change much, with one exception: larger screens for the Pro versions. The iPhone 16 Pro will go from 6.1 to 6.3 inches diagonally, and the 16 Pro Max from 6.7 to 6.9 inches. The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will keep their 6.1 and 6.7-inch panels.
In addition to their new screens, the iPhone 16 should include a dedicated photo/video “Capture” button, faster chips, an improved 5G modem and WiFi 7 on certain models. Definitive answer in September, the presumed date of their presentation.
