Within the framework of the Google I/O that took place yesterday afternoon, we saw news of all kinds: Google Bard in action, Google applications that benefit from AI, new security features of Android 14, Wear OS 4, among other details that the Mountain View company revealed throughout the conference.
Yes, as we have mentioned, Android 14 had its little corner at the event, but Google has taken advantage of the circumstances to launch a new beta that follows the first one, launched a month ago. We welcome Android 14 Beta 2, and we’ll tell you all you need to know.
What’s new in the second beta of Android 14
The new version prior to the launch that will take place, surely in the summer, will be received by the Google Pixel adhered to the beta program, via OTA updates. It is not the only way to test the news ahead of time, and it is that we can update manually or using the Android Flash Tool.
Once we know how to update, let’s see the news round spotted in this second preview, mainly focused on developers:
- Photo enhancements: Android 14 will support 10-bit HDR images and the Ultra HDR format. Likewise, you will be able to capture compressed images at this color depth.
- Powered USB Audio: the operating system will gain support for lossless audio formats, through USB-connected headphones.
- graphic improvements: The system enhances advanced capabilities such as support for custom meshes.
- What’s new in Health Connect: This section becomes part of the system, so it will now be kept up to date with Google Play system updates. We will be able to share our exercise route on maps.
- More privacy in the location: When an app requests access, we will have more information if it is going to be shared with third parties. These data will be obtained from Google Play and the Security section.
- restricted permissions: Now only alarm or call apps will show full screen notifications.
- Predictive gesture navigation: The second beta improves the back gesture, making it more intuitive and smooth. However, it is still not the default option.
- Bug fixes: Android 14 Beta 2 fixes several dozen bugs that the first beta brought.
Compatible devices
Android 14 Beta 2 is compatible with the Google Pixel from the fourth generation (forgetting that, yes, to Pixel 4), therefore the most recent ones will be able to update without impediments. Also, as in the past with previous versions, the beta program is open to other brands.
But first, let’s see the list of compatible Google Pixels:
Regarding the rest of the manufacturers, they join more than a dozen mobiles who are eligible for the upgrade. Of course, remember that the beta program works differently, being necessary to consult the documentation of each firm: Xiaomi, Nothing, Vivo, Lenovo, OnePlus, OPPO, Realme and Tecno
