Apple has released the new M2 chip in its 13-inch MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops, two teams whose line of separation has been blurring over time to be more diffuse than ever. This generation of ultrabooks is accompanied by a considerable increase in price and confusion for some users about which equipment to choose. We comment on their characteristics and put them face to face.

- Design: One of the reasons to buy a new device is that it looks new, “fresh”, different from the previous ones, and the MacBook Air M2 has a refreshed design that compares it to the new 14 and 16-inch Pro, adopting the notch. The MacBook Pro M2 maintains the design of previous generations and the Touch Bar, an element that Apple has gotten rid of in its most expensive laptops.
- Screen: The redesign of the MacBook Air M2 with the notch has meant that its screen has gained some space, in addition to being compatible with billion colors and not just millions of colors, like on the MacBook Pro M2.
- Processor: The M2 chip provides 1.4 times better performance on certain tasks. The MacBook Pro M2 comes standard with a 10-core GPU and keeps the fan so that it does not suffer so much in demanding projects, such as video editing in high resolution 4K-8K.
- Webcam: Video calls became popular with confinement and teleworking, which encouraged manufacturers to improve the webcams on their computers. Apple has equipped the MacBook Air M2 with a FaceTime HD 1080p webcam to have high resolution, while the MacBook Pro M2 is still 720p (even though they were announced at the same time).
- connectivity: Another point where the MacBook Air M2 wins, as it integrates the MagSafe 3 charging port to avoid accidents when your battery is being recharged. Both devices have USB-C Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.0.
- touch-bar: You either love it or hate it. Some people find the Touch Bar very useful, the touch bar that changes depending on the program you are using and shows shortcuts. The MacBook Air has never had it and Apple removed it from its 14-inch and 16-inch Pros, but the MacBook Pro M2 does.
- Price: the two computers have increased considerably in price with the arrival of the M2 chip, and it has been especially noticeable in the MacBook Air M2, which has gone from costing 1,129 euros to 1,519 euros, 400 euro difference. The MacBook Pro M2 starts at 1,619 euros. You can already find offers of these teams.
MacBook Air M2 or MacBook Pro M2, which should you buy?
The MacBook Air M2 is an evolution that brings the ultrabook closer to the 14-inch and 16-inch Pro models in design (not so much in power), and of which the inclusion of the MagSafe 3 connection, Full HD webcam and sound system is appreciated. However, its price increase of 400 euros compared to the previous generation makes it less attractive and it is no longer a laptop “for everyone”.
However, the MacBook Pro M2, which has also risen in price, does not bring much news: no new design, it maintains the 720p webcam and the Touch Bar continues, which you either love or hate. It is also a difficult team to justify and that if it is intended to be configured with more RAM or internal storage, as is the case with the MacBook Air M2, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro is closer in cost.
If you have to choose between one or the other, the MacBook Air M2 is flashier in many ways and it costs less than its “big brother”.
