Quentin Tarantinothe legendary film director as kill bill, pulp fiction and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, charged again against Marvel and its movies. In an interview with the podcast 2 Bears 1 Cavethe filmmaker stated that the actors who participate in the movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are not movie stars. Tarantino thinks that it is the characters and not the actors who shine in these productions.
The director thinks that the fever for the Marvel Cinematic Universe led to its actors becoming famous. Branding them movie stars — an endangered term — wouldn’t be appropriate. Quentin Tarantino affirms that he is not the only one who thinks like this and that it is the characters who turn into stars.
It is important to mention that Tarantino did not directly refer to Chris Evans or Chris Hemsworth. “I’m not even putting them down frankly, to tell you the truth. But that’s one of the… the legacy of the marvelization of Hollywood movies,” he said.
Quentin Tarantino made it clear that not a fan of marvel movies, since it is considered too old for them. “If these movies had come out when he was twenty, I’d be fucking happy and absolutely love them,” he said. “But, you know, I’m almost 60, so no, I’m not that excited about them,” Tarantino stated.
Quentin Tarantino doesn’t hate Marvel movies, but…
During the interview, Quentin Tarantino said that he doesn’t hate Marvel movies, but that he he dislikes them because it’s the only kind of movie Hollywood wants to make. “They’re the only things that seem to generate any kind of excitement among a fan base or even for the studio that creates them. That’s what excites them,” she said.
Tarantino is part of a group of renowned filmmakers who have charged against superhero cinema. Martin Scorsese stated that Marvel movies cannot be considered as cinema, while Francis Ford Coppola went further and called them despicable. More recently, Ethan Hawke — who had a hand in moon knight — defended the criticisms of Scorsese and Coppola and said that these movies are for 14 year olds.
The general outcry is that Marvel movies are drowning out other productions. Stellan Skarsgård, one of the main villains of DuneHe stated a few months ago that the problem is not the movies, but the system. The millionaire profits of superhero movies prevents other films with good actors and better scripts from appearingsince they have no budget or space to compete.
Who is the star? Thor or Chris Hemsworth?
Quentin Tarantino’s statements about movie stars in Marvel movies could cause controversy. Although Chris Evans or Chris Hemsworth took off thanks to superhero movies, others like Robert Downey Jr, Samuel L. Jackson or Gwyneth Paltrow were established stars. It wouldn’t be fair to put Tom Holland and Stellan Skarsgård on the same level, even if the former generates billions of dollars.
Despite criticism from Tarantino and other filmmakers, the reality is that superhero movies are here to stay. Marvel and DC draw up long-term plans to exploit their properties, while movie theater chains are aware of the economic spillover that these productions leave.
