The latest figures published by StatCounter regarding the market share of the most widely used operating systems worldwide only confirm that Windows remains the king of the market with a share of over 70%.
In second place is macOS, Apple’s operating system, an operating system that so far this year has lowered its market share, due to the low sales experienced by the latest models it has launched on the market, a trend that could continue once Qualcomm has launched its processors with ARM architecture and that offer very similar power and autonomy.
But what is most striking about this latest report is seeing how Linux continues to grow in market share continuously, currently standing at 4.44%. This represents a significant increase from a year ago, when the market share was only 3.12%. This represents an increase of 1.3 points in just 8 months.
If we take into account the growth that Linux has experienced in market share so far this year, everything indicates that, by February 2025, it will reach 5% share.
If we take into account that Windows 10 has just over a year left to live, users who cannot or do not want to buy a new computer will have no choice but to stop using it and opt for one of the different Linux distributions available on the market, being Ubuntu one of the most recommended.
Microsoft does not want users with PCs that are not compatible with Windows 11 bypass the requirement and has removed the trick that was used to bypass the TPM 2.0 system check, one of the most important requirements and which is related to the security features of this version of Windows.
Linux has evolved a lot in recent years and today, it is not a standard operating system. nerds that use the command line to do anything, as it includes a desktop interface with a design and operation similar to Windows.
In addition, the number of applications available for Linux is very wide and varied and, unless we need to use a very specific application, we will not have any problem in making the change. And, as a last resort, we can use Wine, to run windows applications on linux.
The increase in market share that Linux has experienced is also reflected in Steamwhere at the moment, 2% of users use a Linux distribution to play the titles available on this platform, although it is not the best option if we want to get the most out of the graphics card.
