Microsoft is recycling the Xbox One and that’s good

The Xbox Remix controller takes the design of the Xbox Series controller, but adds a removable battery and a more environmentally conscious design. We could try it.

Controllers at Xbox are a real passion. The brand spends its time launching new models and even offers a lab to let you design your own. To the point where some players can sometimes have fun noticing that Microsoft is launching more controllers than games for its platforms.

Among the legion of Xbox controllers, Microsoft offers a few specific models such as the Elite Series, or the Xbox Remix controller. We were able to try the latter.

A greener controller?

The Xbox Remix controller is the result of Microsoft’s work to offer a more environmentally conscious product. Let us immediately remember that the best product for the environment is the one that is neither purchased nor manufactured. Either way, controllers aren’t going to stop selling overnight, so might as well design them a little better for the environment.

This controller uses recycled plastic that comes from old Xbox One controllers. Recycled resins also come from other objects such as CDs, water containers or headlight covers.

Visually, Microsoft seems to have decided to take on the work on this controller, which sports colors and textures that we are not used to seeing on Xbox controllers.

In hand, what is it worth?

Microsoft does not change one iota of the design of its controller. We find the excellent grip offered by the Xbox Series controller. The plastic used for the buttons and sticks, which tends to reflect light, could be frightening, but immediately reassures under the fingers. On our few hours with the controller, we are rather seduced by this grip.

It is at the back that the controller will be able to divide more. The texture used on the sides of the controller, where your palms rest, offers a ribbed effect that is rather destabilizing at first glance. We have the impression that it is a texture that could be erased with wear. Fortunately, she ends up forgetting herself and still offers resistance to prevent the controller from slipping from your hands.

The removable battery is included!

The good news of this controller is also the battery and the charging cable in the box. In 2023, Xbox controllers still usually come with a pair of non-rechargeable AA batteries. It wouldn’t have made sense for a controller with an ecological orientation and Microsoft didn’t fall into that trap.

Unlike the Elite Series 2, the battery remains removable. We therefore have the best of both worlds: a rechargeable battery and the possibility of replacing it with batteries or replacing it in the long term without changing the entire controller if it breaks down.

A high price?

Here, however, Microsoft does not give you a gift and the presence of the battery is felt on the price of the product. The Xbox Remix Controller is marketed at 84.99 euros, or 25 euros more than the price of the classic controller (59.99 euros). The rechargeable battery and USB-C cable kit is sold at 22.99 euros by Microsoft. In other words, you pay 2 euros for the design of the controller.

The Xbox Remix controller has been available since April 25, 2023. It is officially compatible with Xbox One, Xbox Series, Windows 10 or 11 PC or with most devices that accept a Bluetooth controller.
