No last-minute gifts for brave Surface Duo owners! Microsoft ended support for the first generation of its dual-screen Android smartphone on September 10, three years after the device’s launch.
Microsoft had promised three years of support for the Surface Duo, and the publisher kept its promise. Software support for the smartphone did end on September 10, 2023, although it was launched on September 10, 2020. Not less, but not more! This means that owners of the device are now at the mercy of the slightest security breach – a serious problem for a product sold for €1,549 when it was released in France in early 2021.
Good ideas poorly executed
For its return to the smartphone market after the flop of Windows Phone, Microsoft took a technologically interesting side path: that of devices with two screens connected by a hinge. It is possible to use the terminal in tablet format (with two screens) or smartphone style (with a single screen).
The concept stood out as the sector was focusing instead on foldable smartphones. This is still the case: Microsoft failed to stand out from the crowd with its Surface Duo! A very average camera, developers with absent subscribers to optimize their apps for both screens, an operating system (Android) poorly calibrated to function correctly… Crippling defects given the price of the machine!

Microsoft, however, persisted with a second generation launched in October 2021, better finished and more convincing, but still just as expensive. And then we only have one opportunity to make a good impression and the editor missed the boat. Moreover, the Surface Duo 2 will also only be entitled to 3 years of software support…
