This measure is due to the fact that “eruption activity and hot cloud avalanches on Mount Semeru remain very high”, so the risk of gas clouds, water vapor or lava flows due to the Heavy rain that falls in the area has increased considerably, this according to information released by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).
“With this increase in volcanic activity, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) raised the status of Mount Semeru from ‘Alert’ to ‘Caution’, or from level III to level IV,” the Agency said.
In addition, the local government has closed access to the nearby areas of Lumajang and Malang, which will remain under surveillance by security officers. However, other nearby areas have begun to evacuate their homes as the eruption makes its way down the side of Mount Semeru.
The Indonesian authorities have distributed 10,000 cloth masks, 10,000 surgical masks and 4,000 children’s masks to prevent respiratory conditions from inhalation of volcanic ash.
We must remember that a year ago, the Semeru volcano surprised by erupting, which caused the death of more than 40 people, in addition, forced the displacement of more than 5,000 while several dozen were injured with burns.
The Indonesian archipelago sits within the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of great seismic activity with about 120 active volcanoes and is shaken by thousands of tremors each year, most of mild or moderate magnitude.
