The Internet connection with mobile data is not enough to communicate immediately, even access to calls disappears if there is no stable network for said service, therefore, different companies are developing projects to connect from the mobile through satellites. .

During the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, the Motorola Defy Satellite Link was shown, an accessory that connects via Bluetooth to a cell phone to send two-way text messages or to a smartphone.

Which cell phones will be able to use the accessory

Defy Satellite Link must be connected to the Bullitt Satellite Messenger application to start the service, from there you can access mobile information such as location and contacts.

Although technology companies such as Samsung and Apple have included their satellite function, with this accessory you can use that same service for any Android cell phone. Well, the ones with the Bluetooth feature that is needed and will be known as soon as it is released.

It is important to know that not all the functions that can be done from the smartphone can be done in the same way with the satellite device, the main purpose is communication with SOS assistance, that is, if I can communicate with an iPhone or an Android that have the same device or SMS enabled.

“The Motorola Defy satellite link is relevant to all of us who have ever found ourselves outside of traditional messaging coverage. Adding secured connectivity with two-way satellite messaging at such an affordable price broadens the appeal of the Motorola Defy range and we look forward to bringing Motorola Defy satellite link to a new segment of mobile phone users in the coming months,” said Dave Carroll, Vice President of Strategic Brand Alliances at Motorola.

Defy Features

The device is resistant to extreme temperatures and unusual environmental conditions with tests Mil-Spec 810H; it is also resistant to water and dust with an IP68 rating.

It has a 600 mAh battery to use it for several days. The design includes a physical SOS and location “Check In” button, which means you can send information even when separated from your paired smartphone.

Satellite technology for any smartphone is the next big step in mobile connectivity, and that’s what MediaTek has delivered with its standalone satellite communications chip, said JC Hsu, corporate vice president and general manager of MediaTek’s wireless communications business.

Finally, this device will be commercialized, that is to say that anyone can use it and it will not be exclusive to large companies.

It’s a significant advance for remote users and emergency services, but this technology also paves the way for other exclusive markets for smartphone satellite communication and connectivity, JC Hsu explained.

So this Motorola defy satellite link will be available from Q2 2023 at international retailers, priced at $99 / €119 / £99 for the device only. A package that includes a year’s subscription to the Essentials Messaging service plan (up to 30 two-way messages per month and SOS Assist) will start at $149 USD / €169 / £149. / $2,980 MXN
