Until recently, one of the biggest unknowns in the Android ecosystem was how many software updates our devices would receive. In January of this year, Samsung made a statement and announced that its phones, starting with the Galaxy S24 family, would receive seven years of Android and One UI updates, thus becoming, along with Google, one of the companies that offers the most updates for its devices.
Now, the company will also bring this update policy to its smart TVs: Samsung will begin offering seven years of operating system updates Tizen OS for its Smart TV line, starting with some 2023 models.
Seven years of updates for Samsung’s “AI TVs”
This new update policy reaches the so-called “AI TVs” from the South Korean company, which basically includes a handful of high-end television models that hit the market in 2023, and covers most of the models that are coming onto the market from 2024.
Samsung applied a similar strategy for updates to Samsung Galaxy phones: in 2022 the company announced that its high-end and many mid-range devices would receive 4 years of Android updates, starting with the Galaxy S22. Now in 2024 They extended software updates to seven yearsbut again, starting with the new generation, the Galaxy S24. Older models will still get four years of updates.
In the case of smart TVs, Only newer models will receive seven years of Tizen updatesThe company hopes that more software updates and new artificial intelligence features will attract more users to its portfolio of smart TVs in an increasingly competitive market.
Until recently, smart TVs stopped receiving new features and software improvements within a few years, which in the worst cases meant that some users did not receive modern streaming applications, among others (fortunately, this can be solved with a device like the Chromecast or Fire TV). Having more years of updates on our Smart TVs is a benefit for users.
