Have you noticed that Twitter has been crashing lately? Well, it is not your imagination and it is not because they are testing a new tool for users of the platform. The owner of the platform, Elon Musk, gives something to talk about once again now that Twitter recovers deleted tweets without the consent of its users.
Users on social networks such as JJVincent, a journalist for The Verge, mention that after deleting just under 5,000 tweets at the beginning of May 2023, “magically” reappeared in his account. These tweets can currently be viewed on your timeline and there are even more if you select “tweets with replies”.
This is not the only case, in Mastodonthe social network that competes with Twitter (via Ryan Broderick’s newsletter), a user complained about Twitter recovering deleted tweets. He noted that 34,000 of his deleted tweets had reappeared on the platform.
“Last November I deleted all my tweets. Each one of them. Then I ran Redact (a program to remove tweets and interactions on the platform) and I deleted all my likes, photos, videos and retweets“, he pointed.
“I woke up today to find 34,000 of them restored by [sic] Twitter, who presumably restored a server farm. ANDThis shows why you should NOT use Twitter, never”. Some have speculated that it is because Twitter’s servers were accidentally moved and restored data. But does this mean that I can take advantage of Twitter recovering deleted tweets?
How are deleted tweets recovered?
These are some of the most effective ways to recover deleted tweets.
Download all tweets via a copy of account data
By downloading a copy of our account data, we can recover History, Direct Messages, tweets, likes, blocked accounts, lists, and multimedia content (photos, GIFs, and videos). This method recovers deleted tweets through the account data stored by the platform. To achieve this you need to do the following:
- Step 1: Access your account through Twitter
- Step 2: Enter the panel on the left and select the topic of “Settings and privacy”.
- Step 3: Click on “Account” to access the “Your Twitter data” section, confirm your account data and select the “Request File” option.
Recover deleted tweets from the Wayback Machine
The best method that recovers deleted tweets from another account is the Wayback Machine. However, it will depend exclusively on one key factor: that someone saved this information on the platform before.
WayBack Machine is a website whose goal is to collect as much content as possible from the internet. And it is used to recover information, from web pages, information from internet forums or, in this case, it recovers deleted tweets. To do this, you will have to do the following:
- Step 1: Access the Wayback Machine.
- Step 2: Enter the URL of the deleted tweet or user account associated with the information you want to recover.
- Step 3: If you are lucky, you will see a calendar of dates with a few days marked in yellow that indicate when the information was saved on the platform.
- Step 4: When you click it, you will be able to recover deleted tweets:
How big of a problem is Twitter?
ZDNET reports that Morrell said that more than 400 people told him they had similar problems. Some said that the old tweets from him were still missing, while others said that it looked like some were back. All this problem brings up that there is a problem in the company’s infrastructure.
As The Verge’s James Vincent mentions: “This is yet another demonstration of Twitter’s crumbling infrastructure and its inability to deliver even the basic features it promises to users.”
