One month after we know Android 13, Android 12 is on 13.5% of Android devices, being the fourth most widespread version. The version of Android that is on the most devices today is Android 11 from 2020.
The same old story
Project Treble, APEX modules, beta programs, agreements with manufacturers, update policies extended over several years… We’ve been hearing about different initiatives for years that should help Android phones update to the latest versions more quickly, and It is true that at the moment of truth, we do not appreciate big changes.
From the hand of Android Studio we have the new android version distribution datadated August 4, showing us the data with useful cumulative distribution figures for developers, although not too easy for humans to understand without prior conversion.
Due to the way they are generated, the version percentages are not going to add up to 100% (in part because Android 12L or Android 13 are not included either), but it is still the best approximation to the state of Android fragmentation that we have until now. the date. And it doesn’t look too good.
The last time we had data was in May and the latest Android 12 was at 6.2% of active terminals. Three months later, the quota has doubled and Android 12 reaches 13.5% almost a year after its launch and a month after the arrival of his replacement. Here are the percentages.

Google still does not show us the data for Android 13 (in the stable version of Android Studio, API 33 cannot yet be chosen), although it is presumable that its use is residual since its beta program is extremely limited. The most widespread version of Android today is Android 11in 27% of active devices.
Android 12, with 13.5%, is still behind the Android Pie of 2018, although at least it has managed to climb to fourth position, because back in May it was still behind Oreo. Looking at it from another angle, Android 12 is in approximately the same percentage of mobiles that maintain Nougat and previous versions.

The good news is that more than half of Android mobiles have Android 10 and higher62.8%, being able to access innovations in terms of fragmentation that make it less important to have the latest version of the operating system, such as updates to the Google Play system and/or new features that reach previous versions through services of Google.
