Users can now use their iPhone and Apple Watch to take the train, subway, bus and more
Apple has officially announced that iPhone and Apple Watch users in Paris will be able to count on a very interesting new feature to pay for public transportation. Starting today, May 22, 2024, it will be possible add a Navigo card in the Apple Wallet system to pay directly with iPhone and Apple Watch.
This is an Apple Pay initiative that we have been waiting for many years in Spain and which, at the moment, is still not available in any city in our country except for the EMT in Madrid. Is a much more comfortable and safe method of using public transport. You simply have to swipe your mobile phone and that’s it, you can go to the metro station, get on the bus or take a train.
The introduction of public transport cards in Apple Wallet has arrived via Île-de-France Mobilités and just in time for summer, where many tourists will be able to benefit from this solution to use public transport more comfortably.
It is now possible to use the iPhone and Apple Watch to use public transport in Paris
Paris already accepts public transport payments through an iPhone or Apple Watch. Train, metro, bus and other passengers will no longer have to go to a tobacconist to buy trips on their cards or use a train or metro ticket machine.
The only thing you will need to use your public transportation is your iPhone.
Starting today, just as Apple announced in a press releaseiPhone and iPad users will be able to buy your trips directly from the Apple Wallet app or in the official Île-de-France Mobilités application.
Users will be able to easily select their Navigo card from Apple Wallet and double-tap the side button, or if they have Express Mode enabled, a user can hold their iPhone up to a reader without having to unlock or turn on the device.
Even if the iPhone runs out of battery, users in Paris will have up to 5 hours to continue using it to pay for public transportation. On the other hand, Apple has also announced that they will incorporate real-time traffic information in Apple Maps in the Paris area.
This feature allows users to access details such as delays, arrival times, transfer options and more directly from Apple Maps, which with iOS 18 will also include custom routes to define which specific path to take.
