The Xbox Game Pass rival that Sony is cooking up for the PlayStation will feature three tiers that will cost $10, $13, and $16 per month, according to VentureBeat’s GamesBeat site. Bloomberg first reported in December about an all-in-one subscription service codenamed Spartacus. According to the documents consulted by our colleagues, Spartacus would merge the benefits offered by PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus and would likely be available for PS4 and PS5.
PlayStation Essential, Extra and Premium service prices
Sony reportedly plans to name the offerings of Spartacus Essential, Extra and Premium, the first being the PlayStation Plus in its current form. It will still cost $10 and give you access to games each month that you can add to your library. Level Extra, meanwhile, will cost $13 and will include access to those monthly games, as well as a games catalog featuring hundreds of older games for you to download. This catalog could be the same as that of PS Now.
Finally, the level Premium will be billed at $16 per month and will include all of the aforementioned perks, plus access to PS Now streaming features and a library of classic games. Also, it will give you access to a feature called “game trials” which will allow you to download and start playing new PS games before they are released. If that sounds like EA’s game trials, you’ll only be able to play a title before its official launch for a set number of hours.
For now, it is not yet known if Sony will add new exclusive games to this service when it becomes available. The CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan, has previously said that it is not viable to integrate novelties that cost hundreds of millions of dollars to develop into a subscription service. However, Microsoft has since acquired Bethesda and recently started the process of acquiring Activision Blizzard as well. The tech giant is adding titles from these two developers to Xbox Game Pass. So Sony will have to find ways to make Spartacus a more attractive option.
The new service would enter the testing phase in the coming weeks and would simply be called PS Plus, PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium.. According to GamesBeat, Microsoft may also officially reveal details of its enhanced subscription service in March.
