Qualcomm released the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 last year, following in the footsteps of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 by adopting a new nomenclature. Now the company has announced an all-new chipset in the Snapdragon 7 line, dubbed the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 2.

I know what you’re thinking, but Qualcomm has confirmed that there is no Snapdragon 7 Gen 2 chipset. QualcommCindy Lei, pointed out in a press conference that the Plus designation no longer represents a chipset with a minor performance improvement compared to its predecessor.

“Within our new mobile platform naming scheme, Plus represents a platform that is at the top of its level or series.Lei added in his introduction.

If you start to get confused with the names of the processors, calm down, we are all the same. Below we see the news that comes with this new SoC for the most powerful mid-range.

A big leap in CPU

It is enough to take a look at the specifications of the CPU to realize that this is a great leap forward. This is the first Snapdragon 7 series chipset with ARM Cortex-X core. Specifically, it has a main Cortex-X2 core at 2.91 GHz, three Cortex-A710 cores at 2.49 GHz and four Cortex-A510 cores at 1.8 GHz.

This CPU configuration assumes Up to 50% performance increase over Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. Qualcomm adds that you can expect up to 15% better single-core CPU performance in Geekbench 6 over the competition (MediaTek Dimensity 8100).

Snapdragon 7 Gen 2

In any case, CPU performance should be similar to last year’s flagship silicon. But Qualcomm also claims that you can expect up to 13% more power efficiency than with the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1.

This is not surprising, since the new chipset is manufactured in a 4 nm process of TSMC, while Gen 1 is manufactured on Samsung’s 4nm process.

The new chipset also brings some machine learning improvements, such as a doubling of AI performance over the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, 40% more AI performance per watt and 3x the unnamed competition.

Prepared to manage cameras up to 200 Mpx

The 18-bit Image Signal Processor (ISP) achieves a maximum of three gigapixels per second, while provides compatibility with 200 Mpx camerassuper video resolution for zoom video capture, 4K HDR recording with triple exposure and a low-light megapixel capture feature.

Other notable features include aptX Lossless audio support, a Snapdragon X62 5G modem (4.4 Gbps downlink) and the new Wi-Fi 6E.

Qualcomm has confirmed that the first commercial devices with the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 2 will launch this month. He adds that Redmi and realme are among the companies that will offer phones with the SoC. The average price of these smartphones is expected to be €500.
