For many years, we have seen and verified how SIM cards are getting smaller and smaller. Due to these changes, we sometimes get confused with all the types of SIM cards that exist, what’s more, we also forget that these cards also have space to save, for example, contacts.
Today, we know that Qualcomm has achieved the necessary certification to implement iSIMs on their most current processors. If we had enough with eSIMs, now we will have another alternative.
Qualcomm receives seal of approval
The concept of iSIMs is not something new, in fact it emerged in 2018. This is not something groundbreaking or that it supposes a drastic change, but it is useful. Comes to bring current eSIMs closer to mobile processorssuch as those made by Qualcomm.
In short, iSIMs are eSIMs integrated into the processor, thus they stop occupying space on the motherboard of our devices. These, as we say, are embedded in the chips, allowing manufacturers to save space.
Well, Qualcomm has announced that the GSMA has approved its new integrated SIM for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. This would be the world’s first iSIM to be released commerciallyin addition to being a pioneer in receiving certification from the most well-known organization in the mobile world.
This has been possible thanks to Qualcomm’s collaboration with Thales, which improve security of non-removable SIMs with this release. By working as integrated cards, these can be imported or exported digitally and there was a security problem.
The design of the new iSIM provides more security preventing manipulation of the SoC (System On a Chip) to change the SIM credentials. This is one of the main reasons why the initiative has been awarded the GSMA security seal of approval.
From the user’s point of view, a mobile with an iSIM will work similarly to current eSIMs. That is, our operator must support the provisioning of virtual SIM, and it will be added in the same way, with the usual method that Android supports.
Finally, the processor manufacturer hopes that this technology spread rapidly in the market. It estimates a total of 300 million devices with iSIM by 2027, so in the coming years we will see if this figure is met.
