Electric cargo bikes are increasingly popular with families with young children, so it was logical for Decathlon to attack this market. The French distributor is therefore making a sensational entrance with this longtail, a bike with an extended rear, sold at a price below the market average. In addition, this Longtail R500Elec currently benefits from a reduction of 200 euros, not counting state aid.
In recent years, urban mobility has been increasingly moving towards electric vehicles: cars, bikes, scooters, everything goes, with several brands seeing this as a market with significant revenue. This is the case of Decathlon, which recently launched into electric cargo bikes by marketing the Longtail R500Elec at an unbeatable price. Sold for under 3000 euros, it is currently benefiting from a reduction of 200 euros from its manufacturer.
Why we recommend the Decathlon Longtail R500Elec
- An electric cargo bike with quality equipment
- The dynamic engine-transmission couple
- Very decent autonomy
Instead of the usual 2899 euros, the Decathlon Longtail R500Elec is now available on sale at 2699 euros at Decathlon. And this, without counting the aid that the State or your local authority can allow you to purchase an electric vehicle.

A recumbent bike for young parents
The R500Elec is a longtail cargo bike, which means that the rear structure is extended to transport a second passenger, children or cargo, making it a family bike. And in terms of being long, the Longtail R500Elec exceeds its competitors by a head with its 2.20 meters in length, but what it gains in space it loses in practicality, especially when it is is about parking. The build quality and robustness are very decent at this price, but some effort on cable management would not have gone amiss.
For a bike at 2899 euros, the Longtail R500Elec offers a complete set of equipment: chain guard, covering mudguards, aluminum central stand, rear skirt guard, Spanninga lights, and a lock on the front wheel. Note also the presence of a saddle with handles and a Suntour fork which allows you to combine comfort and dynamism while riding. Finally, the R500Elec is not a connected bike, it just has a screen displaying the speed, the distance traveled or the remaining autonomy.
Dynamic and controlled driving
The electric assistance is really the nice surprise of this longtail. The R500Elec has a 250 W motor which delivers 48 V for a torque of 58 Nm, which makes it a particularly dynamic vehicle. From the first pedal stroke, the assistance is activated and is spread over three levels, level 3 being the most powerful. Overall, the Longtail R500Elec is stable and pleasant to drive, despite its daunting dimensions. For braking, Decathlon has opted here for hydraulic discs, which are also effective and safe for the driver and passengers.
Finally, the Longtail R500Elec includes a removable 672 Wh battery that we had difficulty inserting and removing during our test. The manufacturer announces a range of 90 km in eco mode, in practice, we covered almost 60 km with level 2 of assistance, which is comfortable for urban use. We must not forget that this data is variable and depends on certain factors such as humidity and the weight supported. In addition, the power of the assistance is reduced towards 30 to 40% autonomy, making level 3 simply unusable. To fully recharge the battery, it takes 4 hours 40 minutes.
