Just a couple of months ago it was confirmed that the plan for all DTT to be in HD was delayed until 2024. However, progress continues to be made for higher resolution television and while at the end of 2021 we knew the standard that will be used DTT in 8K, now it has been known that RTVE prepares a pilot test in this resolution.
It’s about a project in which both the public television corporation and Cisco and the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) are involved, being precisely the latter the one that has shared details on the matter. It should be remembered that already in the past World Cup in Qatar, RTVE itself launched a 4K channel in which to watch the matches.
A pioneering test of great technical complexity
Presentation of the project at the Polytechnic University of Madrid
As those involved in the statement recall, RTVE was already a pioneer in broadcasting in 8K in a test carried out two years ago. It used the DVB-T2 standard, also known as TDT2. Now they intend to continue the tests with the future of DTT broadcasts in mind.
The new project is a pioneer at a global level and entails a great technical difficulty in trying to broadcast live 8K signal and 8 MHz bandwidth UHF multiplex. With this, they not only intend to demonstrate that today the DVB-T2 standard is viable for broadcasts of this type, but also to verify “the future evolution of signal transport using 5G networks”, commented Adolfo Muñoz, director of the Area of Emissions of the RTVE Chair at the UPM.
Precisely embrace 5G networks for DTT broadcasts It is something that is being worked on a lot in recent times. During the last MWC held in Barcelona, a pilot test was carried out. In it, RTVE, Cellnex Telecom, Rohde Schwarz, Ateme and Qualcomm joined in order to carry out emission tests through 5G networks in what is technically known as “5G Broadcast”.
It also highlights the Cisco’s involvement in the projectwho affirm that this is one more step in their idea of ”promoting the digital transformation of critical infrastructures, public services and the national business ecosystem”.
It should be said that technical details and deadlines will be released soon about this project. It will be, as confirmed by the UPM, in a presentation ceremony at the Official Institute of RTVE. There they will also offer a live demonstration of the broadcasts.
