Yesterday we mentioned the A18 chip of the iPhone 16, which will notably include 8 GB of unified RAM. However, two weeks before the official presentation of the new range, we already know everything about the iPhone 16. The leakers have therefore already turned to the iPhone 17, the 2025 model.
The RAM of current iPhones
The built-in memory of current iPhones varies by model: the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus come with 6GB of RAM, while the “Pro” models, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, have 8GB of RAM. This difference would explain why Apple’s artificial intelligence suite, Apple Intelligence, is currently only available on the Pro models.
To meet Apple Intelligence’s requirements, all four iPhone 16 models, as well as the iPhone SE 4 expected in the spring, are expected to come with at least 8GB of RAM. However, according to a Chinese user nicknamed “Phone Chip Expert“On Weibo, next year’s iPhone 17 models could feature 12GB of RAM to enable even more advanced AI applications.
50% off the iPhone 17
The leaker is sure of his sources:
If you’re considering upgrading to an iPhone with AI, the 2025 iPhone 17 might be a better choice. This year’s iPhone 16 only has 8GB of RAM, and most of the AI processing is done in the cloud. Next year’s iPhone 17 will have 12GB of RAM and more advanced AI apps. It’s something to consider for those on a budget who want to upgrade their iPhone.
He is referring here to AI processing that can be done either on the device or on Apple’s servers. The best is obviously to save bandwidth and thus preserve data confidentiality.
This isn’t the first time rumors have surfaced of a big increase (+50%) in RAM in Apple’s 2025 iPhones. In May 2024, analyst Jeff Pu of investment firm Haitong said in a research note that the A19 chip in the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max would come with 12GB of RAM, while the iPhone 17 and the potential iPhone 17 Slim (or “Air”), which could feature a new design, would have 8GB of RAM. However, today’s leak seems to indicate that all models will be treated the same.
A quality source
If you doubt it, let us recall that the leaker ” Phone Chip Expert » is known for his quality predictions. He was notably the first to announce that the iPhone 7 would be water-resistant and that the standard iPhone 14 models would continue to use the A15 Bionic chip, while the A16 would be reserved for the iPhone 14 Pro models.
More recently, “Phone Chip Expert” was also the first to reveal that Apple is developing its own AI server processor using TSMC’s 3nm process, with mass production slated for the second half of 2025.
In the meantime, see you on September 9th for Apple’s “It’s Glowing” keynote. We’re expecting several new products including the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, AirPods 4, Apple Watch SE 3, Apple Watch Ultra 3, Apple Watch X and maybe even the iPad 11 and iPad mini 7.
