The first Avatar movie was shot in 3D and to watch it in the cinema, it was necessary to use special glasses. Smart TV manufacturers quickly saw a goldmine in 3D technology for the home and practically all manufacturers launched one or more models compatible with this technology, models that lasted very little on the market for various reasons such as the low demand for 3D televisions. feeling of immersion that was offered along with the little content available.
The need to use glasses did not help the technology to become popular either. The fact that manufacturers completely forgot about 3D in their televisions does not mean that they had buried it without the possibility of recovering it. During the Gamescom 2024 which is being celebrated these days in Germany, Samsung has taken advantage of this event to bring back 3D monitors, but with an important difference with respect to the first generation since It is not necessary to use glasses.
Samsung 3D monitors without glasses
Samsung’s new 3D monitor uses light field display technology to create realistic 3D images from 2D content. This is made possible by a lenticular lens that directs different images to each eye located on the front and is combined with 3D technology. Eye Tracking to know at all times what part of the screen the user is viewing View Mapping which is responsible for improving depth perception, something essential to offer a realistic 3D sensation.
In the market we can find different devices with Eye Tracking technology that, as we can deduce from the name, track the movement of both eyes through a camera. Samsung has integrated this technology into the Samsung Odyssey 3D to adjust the content to the area of the screen that the user is viewing. Without this technology, the only way to offer 2D content in 3D would be to use special glasses like those that came with smart TVs sold more than a decade ago.
Contrary to what one might think at first, Samsung is going all out and, instead of offering one model of 24 inches or less, it has presented two models of 27 and 37 inches compatible with 3D without glasses. Both have 4K resolutiona response time of 1 ms and a refresh rate of 165 Hz.
Like all gaming monitors from this Korean company, this new range of 3D monitors includes a stand that allows you to adjust the height and tilt as well as rotate to adapt to the position and height of the users on the table. Obviously, it has support for AMD FreeSync Premium Prohas a DisplayPort 1.4 port and two HDMI 2.1 ports.
Price and availability
As usual at this type of event, Samsung has limited itself to officially presenting its commitment to glasses-free 3D monitors, so at the moment we do not know what the price of the models that will reach the market will be. If this new range of monitors really works well, it could mean a before and after when it comes to enjoying video games. Time will tell.
