Qualcomm’s Snapdragon
Bad news for those who were counting on Qualcomm’s new chips to raise the bar on Windows PCs. Some of the X Elite’s first third-party benchmarks raise concerns about whether it will live up to the hype it generates.
A Reddit user who picked up Samsung’s new Galaxy Book4 Edge laptop equipped with the X Elite recently shared disappointing results. In GeekBench tests, the system achieved single-core and multi-core scores of just 1,829 and 11,379 respectively when running on battery power. Connected to the sector, the system achieved only modest gains of 1,841 in single-core and 11,537 in multi-core.
The Snapdragon X Elite is slower than expected
To put these numbers in perspective, they are well below Qualcomm’s own benchmarks, which reach 2,977 single-core and 15,086 multi-core for the X Elite. Even more damning, the Galaxy Book4’s single-core result is even lower than Apple’s 2020 iPhone 12 mini.
The Reddit user also reported poor gaming performance, with Resident Evil Village running at just 40-50 fps at 1080p, even using AMD’s upscaling technology. Battery life was also described as disappointing compared to the brand’s announcements.
Outrage quickly spread across social media and forums, with critics accusing Qualcomm of overpromising and underdelivering, once again, with its PC chips. However, there could be other factors at play than the X Elite’s raw capabilities. Some have speculated that Samsung could slow down the chip’s performance in order to control temperatures and battery drain. The Reddit tester reported that the CPU never exceeded 2.52 GHz, a far cry from its maximum capacity of 4.0 GHz.
It is also possible that it is simply a hardware fault or a software issue that can be fixed by firmware updates. Other GeekBench results of purported X Elite systems have been released with better, but still mixed, performance. Qualcomm has not yet lifted its embargo on the tests, but had already been accused of lying about them by another journalist.
