It’s now official, Sony unveiled today the PlayStation 5 Pro, a new console that aims to be more powerful and able to meet the demands of gamers more easily. As its name suggests, the PS5 Pro will obviously be more expensive than the standard model, with a minimum of €799.99 for the version without the player.
PS5 Pro is coming soon for pre-order
After months of rumors and speculation, Sony has officially lifted the veil on the PS5 Proa super-powered and improved version of the PlayStation 5, scheduled for release on November 7, 2024. With impressive technical specifications, this new console aims to push the limits of video games while waiting for the arrival of the future PS6. It also offers a triple strip as seen in a leak last week.
As Mark Cerny explained, the PS5 Pro stands out for its significantly better performance than the original version. Thanks to a 67% more powerful GPU and 28% faster memory, games will be 45% smoother, which is exactly what gamers are looking for. This technical improvement promises an uncompromising 4K experience, with reduced loading times and amazing management of advanced graphic effects.
Advanced Ray Tracing and Artificial Intelligence
One of the big new features of the PS5 Pro is its improved ray tracing, users will be able to benefit from two to three times more realistic reflections and refractions of light, which will reinforce immersion in gaming environments. Sony is also introducing artificial intelligence technology, the PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution)here’s what the PlayStation team says about NVIDIA’s DLSS competitor:
We’re also introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven resolution upscaling technology that uses machine learning-based technology to deliver ultra-sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.
Of course, Sony’s studios have been updating their games to take advantage of these improvements. The presentation highlighted The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Horizon Forbidden West, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 as some of the games that will benefit from improved visual fidelity and/or frame rates. Third-party partners will also benefit from the PS5 Pro’s extra power, with patches for Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Games that have been patched or developed for the new system will carry a label PS5 Pro Enhanced.
Other features include a game optimization tool that could improve or stabilize the performance of more than 8,500 backwards compatible PS4 games, according to Sony. The feature could also improve the performance of PS5 games that aren’t explicitly enhanced for the Pro. The company adds that its Enhanced Image Quality tool will also improve the resolution of some PS4 games. Other features include Wi-Fi 7, variable refresh rate, and support for 8K resolutions.
Sony has managed to make the PS5 Pro more powerful without making it bigger than the colossal original model. It’s the same height as the original PS5 and the same width as the current model, the PS5 Slim. In addition to a DualSense controller and the awesome Astro’s Playroom, the PS5 Pro comes with 2TB of built-in storage, which is a nice upgrade from the 1TB of previous models.
Official price and release date
The PS5 Pro will be available in two versions:
- Digital version : €799.99 2 TB.
- Version with removable disk drive : 920€ (adding the disk player sold separately for 120€)
With this pricing approach, PlayStation is clearly trying to discourage gamers from investing in a PS5 Pro with a removable disk drive. The price of €799 is already quite high, there is no doubt that few gamers will have the means or even the desire to spend nearly €1000 to be able to buy physical games from retailers. The PS5 Slim still has a bright future ahead of it.
