Students will have a basic Nokia with limited features to calls and text messages!
Eton, the prestigious British boarding school known for having among its alumni numerous Prime Ministers of the country, has taken a radical measure to combat digital distractions: ban new students from using iPhones for the entire school year. Instead they can use a Nokia with limited features.
Unlike other countries or states that prohibit the use of the iPhone, this decision has nothing to do with security. Rather, responds to the need to avoid distractions to studentswhile they remain in the boarding school.
Also unlike other places, The iPhone will not be restricted during school hours, but rather during the entire time the students spend at the boarding school.
A prestigious boarding school bans the use of smartphones
Although the measure applies to smartphones in general, taking into account that the iPhone is the most used by young people, it is likely that it will be the model of mobile phone that students should leave at home.
Starting next September, first-year students will have to leave their iPhones or Android smartphones at home and put them in their use a basic Nokia mobile phone, with functions limited to calls, text messages and, perhaps, the classic game of “Snake”. Adults will be subject to this and other rules that were in force before, such as not having their cell phones at night.
According to a publication of CBS News:
Parents of Eton first-year students were informed of the changes in a letter, which said new 13-year-old boarders should take their smart devices home after their SIM cards are transferred to offline Nokia mobiles provided by the school.
Concern about digital distractions in schools is not new. More and more educational centers are implementing measures to limit the use of smartphones during study hoursaware of the negative impact these devices can have on students’ academic performance and mental health.
To some extent the measure is justified in the case of Eton, because of the strict academic and residential regime of the boarding school. In the past, The school had already required students to hand in their phones at the end of each school day. And it’s certainly a place where access to devices is easier to control.
The truth is The debate over the use of smartphones in schools is a never-ending topic and will continue to be relevant for a long time.
