In the Amazon catalog, the Fire TV Stick multimedia centers and the Echo “smart” speakers stand out, with and without a screen. But there are also tablets, which may not attract as much attention as their other products because there are more options available on the market, but they are quite cheap proposals for entertainment.

However, Amazon wanted to go one step further and launch its most powerful model to date, even designed to be used for productivity: the Fire Max 11 tablet. Big screen, better processor and compatibility with accessories to turn it into a “mini laptop” at a competitive price.

But as with the tablet sector, it is impossible not to compare the Amazon Fire Max 11 with the Apple iPad, whose 10th generation model is also prepared to be used both for entertainment and office work, art or study. We are going to put them face to face to know their characteristics.

Amazon Fire Max 11 and iPad 10 tablet features

• Screen: The Fire Max 11 features a 11-inch IPS panel with a resolution of 2,000 x 1,200 pixels, refresh rate at 60 Hz and technology to reduce blue light. The iPad 10 offers a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina IPS LCD screen that reaches a resolution of 1,640 x 2,360 pixels and a maximum brightness of 500 nits. The refresh rate is also 60 Hz.
• Processor: The 10th generation iPad does not have the latest Apple chip, but it does have one that offers very good performance both in applications and in games with a high graphic load, the A14 Bionic. Amazon’s Fire Max 11 integrates the MediaTek MT8188J, an eight-core processor with which it obtains 50% more performance than the Fire HD 10. However, it is not designed for demanding uses.
• RAM and storage: Amazon’s tablet integrates 4GB of RAM and 64 or 128 GB storage options that can be expanded by microSD. The iPad also has 4 GB of RAM and 64 or 256 GB of storage (not expandable).
• cameras: those of the iPad (2022) are from 12MP, with the front having the Centered Framing function to improve video calls. Those of the Fire Max 11 are 8 MP.
• Battery: Apple promises that its iPad 10 can reach 10 hours of autonomy per charge. Amazon goes a step further and ensures up to 14 hours of autonomy. Of course, it depends on the use, and these figures are usually consuming video.
• OS: The iPad (2022) comes with iPadOS 16, an exclusive system for the company’s devices. The Fire Max 11 features fire OS in its version 8which is based on Android 11, and has Amazon services, not Google’s.
• connectivity: Both tablets have WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5, but Amazon’s integrates a USB-C (2.0) connector and the iPad comes with Lightning. In addition, Apple’s proposal can be configured with support for 5G networks.
• Others: the two tablets are unlocked by fingerprint and they can be used with productivity accessories, such as keyboard and trackpad covers, as well as stylus.
• Price: the iPad (2022) starts at 579 euros, and the Fire Max 11 is available in the United States from 229 dollars.

iPad (2022) VS Amazon Fire Max 11, which tablet to buy?

Before going into details, specify that the Amazon Fire Max 11 is not for sale in Spain; At the moment its sale is limited to some territories such as the United States of America and the United Kingdomand it is unknown if it will ever arrive in Spain, since not all of the company’s products have landed in the territory.

The Fire Max 11 is Amazon’s most powerful and complete tablet to date. It is not only more powerful, but it is also prepared to be used more productively, and not only for entertainment by consuming multimedia content from platforms such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.

In terms of power, it is not up to the iPad (2022), which, although it does not integrate the latest Apple chip, is capable enough to run demanding applications and video games with a high graphic load. The MediaTek processor that it incorporates is eight cores and provides 50% better performance than the Fire HD 10, so users will find a fairly smooth experience on a day-to-day basis. This is also due to the increase in RAM memory (4 GB), which never hurts.

The operating system used by the Fire Max 11 is fire OS 8; an Amazon development based on Android 11 with its own customization layer and that powers the services of Jeff Bezos’s company. That is why the Google Play Store and its extensive catalog of applications are not available, but it does have its own store with apps like Netflix, Spotify, iVoox or TikTok, and it is possible to access YouTube and other services from the Internet giant through the Silk web browser. This is possibly one of its biggest negative points, since it is quite likely that users are missing some of the applications they use regularly. However, as it is based on Android, it is possible to install them in alternative ways, although proper functioning is not guaranteed or that they will work directly if they require Google services.

The catalog of applications available for iPad and adapted to its large screen is one of the strengths of the device, and one of the reasons for its success. In the absence of knowing if more developers will be encouraged to port their applications to Fire OS 8, in this case the iPad 10 is a safer bet due to its wide range of options and possibilities.

Regarding the photographic section, the iPad stands out for its 12MP cameras; especially the front one with the Centered Framing function, which is a plus during video calls. Although it is true that tablets do not usually mount as good sensors as mobile phones, in this case they are quite decent and can save us from trouble. Those of the Fire Max 11 are more modest, even though they are 8 MP, but for video calls and occasional use they are more than enough.

The autonomy It is another point to take into account, and both proposals offer good figures. Around 10 hours in the case of the iPad (2022) and up to 14 hours in the Fire Max 11. It all depends on how the tablets are used; These numbers are usually based on the time consuming streaming series and movies, as this is one of the main tasks for this type of device.

About the accessories, the two tablets have official keyboards with trackpads and stylus not to be products intended merely for entertainment. In fact, this is the first Amazon tablet that has these additions and a declaration of intent. The problem is that the iPad has been with them for much longer and its operating system is more adapted to them, not to mention that there are more applications that take advantage of it. We will have to see if the developers are encouraged to bring their apps to Fire OS.

And lastly, the price. Here the Fire Max 11 wins, since the complete tablet pack with accessories retails for around $329.99, much less than the cost of the iPad 10 with accessories. This is undoubtedly the greatest attraction of the tablet, since for this money we can have a “mini laptop” for office automation and entertainment. The bad thing is that it cannot be bought in many countries, and it is unknown if it will ever arrive in Spain, so it would have to be imported (thus making its price more expensive). Therefore, the iPad 10 is, of the two options, the only one officially available in our market.
