As we know, a vehicle registration is similar to our DNI, which is unique and allows any type of identification. Therefore, the deterioration, falsification or manipulation of the license plate carries a high fine. In fact, and like any other element of the car, the license plate must be in good condition for circulation. But, at the same time, they can penalize us for two different reasons (even at the same time).
We must maintain the registration
The DGT, the Directorate General for Traffic, has always ensured that we keep all the elements of our car in good condition. It does so repeatedly with warnings so that we have safe and comfortable driving at all times, both for ourselves and for the rest.
Thus, it has sent a notice focused on the maintenance of our license plates and the high economic sanctionsaccompanied by the important loss of points, as a consequence of its non-compliance.
In the same way, over time, it is possible that this identifying element suffers some damage that prevents the correct display of a number or letter, so it will have to be changed as soon as possible.
What does the DGT tell us?
In this way, and as something to consider, what the DGT tells us is that driving with a car that has a license plate in poor condition or is not legible, or that directly lacks it, is considered as an offense by the Traffic Code. An obligation that belongs to the driver, not the owner of the vehicle, as established in article 10 of the Traffic Law.
In these, current legislation contemplates the application of a fine of up to 200 euros (reduced to 100 with prompt payment) in the event that a traffic agent considers that the license plate is not placed on the correct position, the digits are partially or totally erased, that it has some decorative element, that it is partially bent or broken om also, that the bulb that illuminates the hob is off. They are certainly damage very common… and any driver can miss them at some point.
Its modification can cost us 6,000 euros and 6 card points
These types of sanctions also have room to contemplate whether some type of addition has been placed on them to fool the radar such as duct tape, reflective sprays, CDs around the plate…
On the other hand, and beyond all these situations in which we face fines of about 200 euros, there is also the case (which there are) of those who choose to modify it. we talk about a license plate tamperingin which the DGT can penalize us with up to 6,000 euros and the loss of 6 points from the driver’s license, apart from the immobilization of the vehicle.
In addition, the consequences for trying to avoid other fines with an illegal, incorrect or other vehicle registration will also mean the withdrawal of 6 points from the driver’s license, up to a penalty of between 6 months and 3 years in jail.
