Apple wants to make the iPhone lock screen more useful.
Apple’s annual developer conference is approaching, in which the company will present all the software news for iOS 17 and other operating systems such as iPadOS 17, tvOS 17 or macOS 14, among others. As we approach the appointed date – the WWDC 2023 it will be on June 5 – more and more leaks are appearing.
While we recently knew that iOS 17 will allow you to create a voice that sounds like the users, now we have discovered other very interesting news that will accompany the new iPhone software update and that are related to the always-on display functionality.
What’s new for the always-on display in iOS 17
Apple has very interesting plans for the iPhone lock screen with the arrival of iOS 17. According to reports from Bloombergthe Cupertino company will introduce new functions to the hardware that is responsible for keeping the screen always on and that could lead to a kind of “smart display mode” or “Smart Display”.
The always-on screen of the iPhone 14 Pro came with many functions
Currently, the iPhone’s always-on display gives way to the time, date, five widgets, notifications, and a dimmed version of the wallpaper. With the new functionality of the display always on Apple would include a new view with more elements that will activate with the iPhone locked and in landscape position. Apparently, Apple is also working on developing improvements to the landscape orientation of iPadOS 17.
As Mark Gurman pointed out in Bloomberg:
“It will operate in a similar way to displays designed by Alphabet and Amazon, according to people familiar with the project. The idea is to make iPhones more useful when, for example, they sit on a desk or nightstand.”
The new always-on display will be able to present data such as “weather information, calendar events and notifications like on a smart home automation screen”. In fact, previous rumors claimed that iOS 17 could incorporate Apple Maps services on the lock screen and, perhaps, also keep the screen always on.
The iOS 16 lock screen allows you to customize various aspects of the system
On the other hand, in iOS 17 the always-on screen will continue to remain with a dark background and white color text.
Everything seems to indicate that iOS 17 will make much better use of space on the lock screen of the iPhone. Adding, hopefully, a little more customization to the elements that appear on the screen. We’ll see what they surprise us with!
There is speculation that this new technology for the always-on display only will be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models. Apple may use the exclusivity of this feature to encourage consumers to upgrade their smartphones, a strategy they commonly employ with the launch of a new iPhone.
