Although Android in general and the Pixels in particular offer diversity when choosing the wallpaper, with Android 14 Google wants to go a step further: The system includes a wallpaper generator based on Emojis. It allows you to select the emoticons that will go in the background, how they will be distributed, the accent color and even create really striking random images. Still don’t know the Emojis workshop?
We are just a few weeks away from attending the official deployment of Android 14, the new version of the operating system that, according to the latest leaks, will begin to be distributed stably with the presentation of the next Google Pixel 8. And, given that we have been betas and developer versions, I have been able to test How Android 14 matured for mainstream use. There aren’t too many profound changes, although there is one that, personally, seems brilliant to me.
Unique wallpapers in two seconds
Android is not the first system to include a wallpaper generator based on Emojis, since, with the output of iOS 16, Apple put it as standard on the iPhone. Even so, I think that Google has improved the formula in two very specific aspects: that the emoticons do not stand out more than the desktop shortcuts and that these Emojis are exclusive to the wallpapers. Whether they are better or worse than native Android ones is a matter of taste.
With Android 14 the native wallpaper application of the Google Pixel, and that also can be downloaded on other devicesadds a new option in the wallpaper selector: «Emoji Workshop»; along with his peculiar turtle. Once inside, the system creates a random wallpaper by selecting various Emojis and applying style and color to the generated design.
That the wallpaper doesn’t look quite right? There is always the option of completely customize it by selecting which Emojis to include, what will be the desired effect for the elements and what accent color will the wallpaper have. This color will be the one that Android 14 applies to menus and applications thanks to Material You.
The Emojis workshop is included in Android 14 for the Google Pixel. It is expected that it will be maintained on these phones once the stable version of the operating system is available. AND It will probably end up reaching brands whose customization layer is not exaggerated; as is the case of Nothing, Motorola or Nokia.
Rounding out the excellent native Pixel backgrounds

The Google Pixel wallpapers have been among my favorites since the animated ones were included in the first model. Google was renewing the entire gallery with authentic moving wonders, also static backgrounds; many of which can be downloaded to other Android devices through the wallpapers app. And with the Emojis workshop Google rounds off the most basic customization on any device with a screen.
The app works very well, the backgrounds created enhance the desktops and lock screen without attracting more attention than the system elements, the design of the emoticons is attractive, it contrasts with the one that the Emojis have by default in Android 14 and can be combined in multiple ways to create unique wallpapers. They even have boot-up animations upon unlocking, a touch that improves the overall customization aspect.
The Emoji Workshop is a simple and fun way to give your lock screen, desktop, or both a new look. And it allows you to save all the wallpapers created
Google has achieved a native app that I would pay for on my Android. Now I just hope that it ends up being deployed to the majority of people who are going to update to Android 14.
