The plan that the European Union intends so that your electronic devices consume less energy in sleep mode.
We have a multitude of electronic devices in our home, and although we usually turn them off when we are not using them, many of them remain idle.
When an appliance, or any device is at rest or in stand byit continues to consume energy, although less than when it is fully operational, allowing it to update in the background when we are not using it, or to turn on very quickly when we require it.
An example of electronic devices in Stand By can be the television when the light is on, also in certain cases the laptop, the fridge, or a router, among others.
Well, the EU has said enough is enough, and wants to introduce changes in the Ecological Design Regulation to reduce the consumption in Standby of the electronics devices.
Basically what they are looking for is that the consumption at rest is considerably reduced, changing the design of the devices.
In addition, on this occasion, the regulation also extends to devices with an external low-voltage power supply such as a smart speaker or a WiFi router.
According to estimates by the European Union, with this new regulation, by 2030, around 4 Terawatt hours (TWh) can be saved, which would prevent the emission into the atmosphere of 1.36 million tons of CO2 equivalent.
This would also be reflected in the economy of consumers, which would mean savings of 530 million euros globally.
These are the devices that spend the most in Stand By
- Printer with 52.6 kW/h in annual consumption at rest
- Router 35kW/h
- Music chain 35 kW/h
- Gas boiler 27.2 kW/h
- Smart speakers 26.3 kWh
According to the OCU, it is estimated that 400 kW/h consumption is exceeded per year at rest, and this translates into an additional expense that would exceed €100 per year in unused consumption.
The OCU offers a series of tips so that we can minimize standby consumption in our devices:
- They recommend unplugging from the current those devices such as the television or the sound system that do not need to be at rest.
- Also that we can unplug the laptop when we are not using it.
- The user could opt for more efficient appliances.
- Or you could even invest in smart plugs that disconnect the appliance from the network.
- Also, don’t forget, if you go on vacation this summer, disconnect most of the devices from the current, such as the router or, if possible, even the fridge.
So with this you will not only be able to save on consumption in Stand By in your electronic devices, but it may also be that in the future the new devices that you buy will already come prepared with this regulation.
