Two years after Apple unveiled its first Macs equipped with homemade chips, Facebook Messenger has finally been updated to fully exploit the capabilities of these computers. With this, those who rely on Messenger to communicate with family, friends and loved ones will have a better experience running the iOS app on Mac. Facebook Messenger History Update 158 doesn’t say much besides “New! Messenger has a new look and more ways to connect with friends”, but Daniel Halawi spotted universal compatibility with Macs running Apple Silicon.
Without an official explanation, it’s hard to know how much Facebook has been able to improve the Messenger experience. That said, most developers can make their apps run smoother, less battery-hungry, and at least twice as responsive by allowing their software to run on the latest Macs.
Why use Facebook Messenger on macOS?
- Type even faster, multitask during video chats and stay connected with desktop notifications;
- Organize individual or group meetings with high-quality voice and video chat functions;
- Accommodate up to 50 people without time limit;
- Reduce screen glare in low-light situations with Dark Mode;
- Use stickers, GIFs and emojis when words just aren’t enough;
- Send photos and videos to your friends.
Facebook Messenger is Meta’s first application to offer compatibility with Apple’s new Macs. Recently, the company began testing a version of WhatsApp for Mac through Apple’s Catalyst project, which is heavily tied to a future iPad app.
While WhatsApp’s new app is yet to be released, you can enjoy the universal Facebook Messenger app by visiting the App Store from your Mac.
