September is traditionally the month of new iPhones, and this year we’re expecting new iPhone 16s that will be even more photographic, with a new dedicated camera button, according to the latest rumors, among other hardware news.
However, one of the most interesting rumors about Apple phones is not related to the iPhone 16, but rather to the next generation, the iPhone 17; and it is expected that Apple will launch a new version of its smartphone with a completely different design, an ultra-thin model which promises to be a bet on the look and not just because of the technical specifications. Here’s what we know so far about the iPhone 17 Air.
The iPhone Air promises a spectacular design, but with some consequences
Known as the iPhone 17 Airat least until Apple confirms its name during its presentation in 2025, this new iPhone model would have an incredibly thin body. This, in itself, is already surprising, considering that the iPhone 15 is just 7.8 mm thick. The iPhone 17 Air would be even thinner, and will have a titanium and aluminum frame.
But designing such a thin phone has some consequences: the iPhone 17 Air will not be a “Pro” model, in fact, rumors claim that it will have technical specifications similar to those of the base iPhone 17, including the same A19 processor and 8 GB of RAM (the minimum amount of RAM to be able to use all of Apple Intelligence’s features). The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, on the other hand, would feature the A19 Pro processor and 12 GB of RAM.
The iPhone Air screen would be a ProMotion OLED panel of 6.65 inches and adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. In general, its size would be very similar to that of the iPhone 15 Plus, whose screen is 6.7 inches.
On the other hand, there are rumors that the iPhone Air could have a single sensor in its main camerainstead of the two sensors of the iPhone 17 and the three sensors of the “Pro” models. This, again, due to the ultra-thin thickness that the mobile would have. Another big unknown is the battery that this iPhone Air would include. Being a thinner mobile, logically there would also be less space for the battery, so its size (and capacity) would be smaller than the current “Plus” models.
I mention the Plus model because the iPhone 17 Air is expected to arrive to replace this model in Apple’s mobile portfolio starting in 2025. Thus, the available catalog would be as follows:
- iPhone 17
- iPhone 17 Pro
- iPhone 17 Pro Max
- iPhone 17 Air
However, although it would be the replacement for the iPhone Plus, it would not have the same price; in fact, it is expected to be more expensive than the Pro modelsThe iPhone 17 Air is rumored to be priced at $1,300 in the United States, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max would cost $1,200 (the same price as the current iPhone 15 Pro Max). Therefore, the iPhone 17 Air would be Apple’s most expensive phone, but also its most ambitious, with a look renewed with which they will try to attract users who are looking for a groundbreaking design and not just the most advanced hardware available.
