The selection that we made, in addition to being the best sellers in 2022, are also the most interesting due to their characteristics and that are well adapted to the new reality that the Covid-19 pandemic brought to Mexico, with its ups and downs in the economy.
FIAT Pulse
FIAT entered the subcompact SUV segment in 2022, one of the most popular in the industry, after failed attempts with the 500X being too expensive and the 500L not really an SUV.
The new FIAT Pulse is a model developed in Latin America and manufactured in Brazil on a new architecture for the needs of the entire region, with modern and efficient turbocharged engines and a connectivity and infotainment platform for new generations.
Indirectly related to the Argo, it has the brand’s turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine instead of the outdated 1.8-liter block, which no longer passes emissions regulations in the country of Rio de Janeiro. It delivers 125 hp and 148 lb-ft to the front axle through a CVT automatic transmission, to compete directly against giants like the Nissan Kicks, Chevrolet Tracker or Volkswagen T-Cross.

Honda BR-V
Although in Mexico it is recent, the current generation of the BR-V has its years in the Asian market and in fact received a mid-life update just for the year 2020. The new generation is necessary to keep it competitive against rivals such as the Suzuki Ertiga XL7 and the Mitsubishi Xpander Cross, which have already surpassed it for space solutions and even general refinement.
It arrived from Asia to Mexico, based on the new City platform and with the 119-hp 1.5-liter engine and the improved transmission with continuous variator. To return to being the leader of the segment, one that has become very popular for having space for seven for relatively little money, it will take a significant leap in the areas of connectivity and infotainment and it would do very well to integrate six airbags instead of just two, like the current one.
Jeep Commander
The 2022 Jeep Commander is part of the litter of new SUVs developed and produced in Brazil for the entire region, based on the Compass platform but extended to accommodate three rows of good-sized seats, as a rival to the Peugeot 5008, Volkswagen Tiguan , SEAT Tarraco and even a Kia Sorento, but with some off-road capability.
With a 1.3-liter turbocharged engine and a healthy 180 hp, associated with a six- or nine-speed automatic transmission, depending on whether it is a single-wheel drive version or a 4×4. For now, it will be manufactured in Brazil for Latin America, but with the production of the Compass in Toluca and the evident interest of the US market in SUVs with these characteristics, we would not be surprised if it could be Mexican later.
Before I say goodbye, I want to remind you that SUVs date back to World War II when they obviously looked very different from what we see now and were used as commercial and military vehicles. Its design resembled a van and offered better habitability than a car, with enough space for five people to travel. But it was not until the 1990s that they became fully popular, as the demand for robust and safe automobiles grew from a sector of society that asked for a family vehicle, but resistant and versatile that many buyers are looking for this year.
